Seniors Lead NSU Baseball To 13-4 Win Over Florida Memorial

Three Seniors Accumulate 3+ Hits Apiece In The Victory

Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. (Apr. 27, 2010)  Three seniors led the Nova Southeastern University baseball team to a 13-4 win over Florida Memorial in action at the NSU Baseball Complex on Tuesday evening. Behind the efforts of Eric McCans, Rhys Roberts and Brayan Valencia, the Sharks improved to 31-19 on the season while the Lions fall to 18-30.

Roberts (Parkland, Fla.) got the scoring started in the top of the first inning with a sacrifice fly. Junior designated hitter Dusty Maggs (Satellite Beach, Fla.) and junior catcher Michael Hartley (Davie, Fla.) added RBI singles in the inning for the Sharks.

After Florida Memorial struck for two runs in the second inning, sophomore outfielder Jonathan Escarza (Miami, Fla.) drove in two runs with a RBI single in the bottom of the third inning to put NSU ahead 5-2.

The Sharks put the game away in the bottom of the fourth inning when Roberts bashed a three run homer to give NSU an 8-2 lead.

NSU added five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, capped by a two run homer by McCans (Pembroke Pines, Fla.).

For the game, McCans led NSU at the plate by going 4-5 with three runs scored and two RBI. Roberts finished 3-4 with three runs scored and six RBI and extended his hit streak to 17 games with a single in the bottom of the third inning. Valencia (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) concluded the game 3-5 with three runs scored and a RBI. Each senior also made an unexpected appearance on the mound for NSU in the top of the ninth inning.

Maggs and junior outfielder Matt Seese (Ocala, Fla.) also had three hits apiece in the Sharks victory.

Junior Ryan Whelan (Boca Raton, Fla.) received the win, pitching two hitless innings of relief.

NSU travels to face No. 7 Florida Southern in a three game SSC series in Lakeland, Fla. The series will open with a single game on Friday, Apr. 30th at 6 pm and conclude with a doubleheader beginning at 1 pm on Sunday, May 2nd.
