FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Apr. 6, 2010) - The Nova Southeastern softball team improved its winning streak to eight games by taking two against the Northwood Seahawks at home Tuesday night. The Sharks (35-12) took the first game, 8-0 and won the second, 13-2.
Dani Caron (Sr., Wellington, Fla.) kept her momentum going Tuesday by starting the night with a complete game shutout. She held the Seahawks (6-23) to one hit and no walks over five innings pitched. She faced 18 batters and struck out five of them. She improved her record to a team-best 14-3. Jessica Hernandez (Sr., Miami, Fla.) also played well, going 1-for-3 with three RBI.
Lauren Lopez (Sr., Miami, Fla.) had a big game in her second outing, batting 3-for-4 with two runs, two triples, and four RBI. Five Shark batters had multiple hit games in NSU's 13-2 victory.
For the seventh straight time, The Sharks scored in the opening inning of the first game. Noemi Luciani (Sr., Miami, Fla.) led off with a walk and was advanced to third base by a sacrifice bunt from Rachel Talenfeld (Jr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and a bunt single from Lopez. Hernandez brought them both home with a double down the left field line.
The Sharks struck again in the third by scoring three runs. Patty Rivero (Sr., Miami, Fla.) and Luciani started the frame by reaching base and were sent home on a wild pitch and an error. Lopez reached on an error in right field and was driven home by Hernandez.
NSU closed out the first game with two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth inning. Brittany Phillips (Jr., Seminole, Fla.) scored one run with a single up the middle and Rivero scored another off a groundout. With two outs on the board in the final inning, Laura Saladrigas (Fr., Hollywood, Fla.) pinch hit and knocked in a single but advanced to third on an error. Brittany Lamb (Sr., West Palm Beach, Fla.) reached base on an error at first base, which scored Saladrigas to end the game.
The Shark offense was firing on all cylinders in the second game, scoring in the bottom of every inning. With two outs on the board in the first inning, the Sharks took the lead by scoring four runs. Hernandez and Lopez both hit singles and were driven home on a double to left center field from Saladrigas. She would score as well when Caron hit an RBI single to right center field.
The Sharks scored a total of five runs over the second and third innings. In the second, Lopez drove in two runs on a triple and eventually scored off of a wild pitch. In the next inning, Luciani scored off an error and Talenfeld was driven home by a single from Herrnandez.
The Sharks closed the show in the fourth inning by scoring four runs. Dana Bergner (Sr., Palm Harbour, Fla.) walked and eventually scored off a throwing error. Talenfeld hit an RBI infield single and Lopez capped off the game by driving in two runs off of her seventh triple of the season.
Saladrigas returned to the circle for her first start since Mar. 16 and earned the victory. She allowed four hits and one earned run over four innings. Lexi Sarradet (Jr., Miami, Fla.) entered in the fifth to close the show and retired three straight batters. The Sharks improved their all-time record against Northwood to 48-0.
The Sharks will return to Sunshine State Conference play this Friday when they face Barry at home starting at 7 pm.
