HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (May 15, 2010) - The Nova Southeastern University softball team was eliminated from the NCAA Division II South Regional Tournament after falling 6-0 to No. 9 Rollins College on Saturday afternoon at the Charger Softball Complex. The loss concludes the Sharks season at 45-17 while Rollins stands at 45-5 and advances to play No. 23 Arkansas-Monticello in another elimination game.
Rollins took an early lead in the top of the first inning, scoring on a double by catcher Christine Roser. The Sharks threatened in each of the first four innings when their leadoff hitter reach via a walk, but could not find the clutch hit to drive in the run.
NSU starting pitcher Devin Higginbotham (Jr., Palatka, Fla.) kept the Tars bats at-bay until the top of the fifth inning when Rollins scored two runs on three hits to lead 3-0. The big hit of the inning was a two-out RBI double off the bat of Tars first baseman Jessica Moreland.
Luciani broke up Rollins' starting pitcher Kirsten Frame's no-hit bid in the bottom of the fifth inning with a single up the middle. The Sharks had runners on second and third base with just one out in the inning before the Tars brought in reliever Christine Roser to induce a line drive, double-play to end the Sharks scoring threat.
NSU left two more runners on in the sixth inning before Rollins broke the game open when catcher Krista Rodden hit a three-run homer in the top of the seventh inning.
Luciani and senior outfielder Jessica Hernandez (Miami, Fla.) had the two hits in the game for NSU.
Higginbotham took the loss for the Sharks, allowing six runs on ten hits in six innings pitched. Lexi Sarradet (Jr., Miami, Fla.) came on to finish the seventh inning, allowing just one hit and no runs.
Frame earned the win to improve to 31-2 on the season. She stranded seven Sharks on the base paths while allowing one hit and walking five.
