Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. (May 8, 2010) - The Nova Southeastern University baseball team made its case to be included in the NCAA Division II South Regional heard loud and clear on Saturday evening at the NSU Baseball Complex, as the Sharks swept Lynn 16-6 and 16-3 in their final Sunshine State Conference games of the regular season. The wins helped the Sharks concluded the regular season on a 26-7 tear, set a program for most SSC victories in one season, and marked the first time ever that NSU has finished undefeated at home in SSC play. NSU finishes the regular season with a 35-21 overall record and 15-9 in SSC play. Lynn falls to 6-36-1 and 6-18 in SSC play.
"It's been a tremendous year," said NSU head coach Michael Mominey. "We have done everything that we could do since March 1st. I've never seen a turnaround like this. We finished 26-7, swept every home conference series, won the most SSC games in program history and had the third most wins in program history. That's a tremendous season no matter what our fate is."
The Sharks set a new season high with 24 hits in the game one 16-6 rout of Lynn. Junior first baseman Dusty Maggs (Satellite Beach, Fla.) slammed two home runs and finished the game 4-5 with three runs scored and six runs batted in.
Junior shortstop Luis Penate (Miami, Fla.), sophomore outfielder Nikko Echevarria (Abqaiq, Saudi Arabia), senior outfielder Brayan Valencia (Pembroke Pines, Fla.), senior second baseman Eric McCans (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) and junior catcher Michael Hartley (Davie, Fla.) had three hits apiece.
Junior starting pitcher Isaac Hicks (Ft. Myers, Fla.) improved to 9-0 on the season by pitching seven innings for the win. He allowed 12 hits and six earned runs. Junior Torey Ekey (Merritt Island, Fla.) and freshman Vinnie Contaldi (Jupiter, Fla.) pitched the final two scoreless innings.
Nova Southeastern picked up where they left off in game two, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first inning en route to the 16-3 victory.
Maggs blasted two more home runs and finished the game going 3-3 with three runs scored and three RBI. Hartley also went deep twice in the game and finished 2-4 with two runs scored and four runs batted in. Junior designated hitter Haven FitzSimmonds (Loxahatchee, Fla.) was 2-4 with a home run, two runs scored and four RBI.
McCans had three hits for the second consecutive game while Penate and senior third baseman Rhys Roberts (Parkland, Fla.) also had multi-hit games.
Sophomore starting pitcher Sean Tighe went five innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits for the win. He struck out seven while walking only one. Ekey followed with a scoreless inning for the second consecutive game and closer Sean Albury (Jr., Nassau, Bahamas) shut the door with a 1-2-3 seventh inning.
The game marked the final regular season games of the careers of McCans, Matt Fisher (Sunrise, Fla.), Roberts and Valencia. "Our senior leadership was indescribable this season," said Mominey. "It really is hard to put into words. It was the best senior leadership I've ever seen in this baseball program."
The Sharks will now await word on a possible bid to the NCAA Division II South Regional Tournament.
