The Nova Southeastern University volleyball team split two matches on the second day of the UIndy Invitational on Saturday. The Sharks defeated West Virginia State 3-0 to open the final day, but dropped the nightcap to Tusculum 3-1.
The first two sets were back and forth with both teams maintaining a close score before the Sharks would go on a mid-set rally and put themselves out of reach, winning set one by seven and set two by score of 25-16.
NSU found themselves down early in the third set, but kept the Yellow Jackets in reach before starting a late set rally to grab their first victory of the year.
Nova Southeastern dominated in the kills category averaging six more kills a set to West Virginia State and recording 15 kills for the second and third sets. The Sharks set a season high kill percentage in the second set posting a .407. Molly Sigerich and Anabely Escarpita capped season high double-digit kills for the Sharks today with 15 and 11 respectively. Rachel Woodson hammered out eight kills, while Jordan Pappas led the team with 38 assists.
The second match was close throughout with neither team able to take a large lead in any set. The largest margin of victory was in the in the first set with the Pioneers winning 25-21. Two of the last three sets were decided by three (25-22) with the third set being decided by two points (28-26) in extra.
The Sharks Anabeley Escarpita (17) and Rachel Woodson (13) led the Sharks with double-digit kills with Molly Sigerich adding seven and Paola Luiz pounding six. Jordan Pappas dished out a season-high 42 assists.
Nova Southeastern is back in action next Friday Sept. 9 facing West Alabama in the fifth annual Shark Classic at 7 pm.
