BOX SCORE
BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern women’s soccer team (8-2-2, 2-1-2 SSC) travelled to Boca Raton, Fla. Tuesday and came away with an afternoon victory against the Lynn Fighting Knights (7-4-1, 2-3-0 SSC), 2-1.
Sierra Lelii (Fr., Seminole, Fla.) continued her clutch play as she chipped in her team-high third game-winning goal of the season in the 83rd minute. While the Fighting Knights’ defense attempted to clear the ball out of the box, Lelii stole the ball and fired it into the back of the net from the top right corner of the penalty box. It was her fourth goal of the season, more than any other freshman on the team.
The match was a grueling battle played under humid conditions at the McCusker Sports Complex. The Sharks had to battle from behind in the match as the Fighting Knights put themselves on the board first. Kirstie Schults received a cross from Lina Forsman to score her first goal of the season. After shutting out her last two opponents, it was the first goal
Michelle Fuerst (Jr., Armonk, N.Y.) has allowed in the month of October.
The Sharks entered the half down a goal but came out and dominated the second period. In the 52nd minute, Lelii scored her team's first goal to tie the game at 1-1. Assisted by freshmen
Andi Burchfield (Greeneville, S.C.) and
Melissa Madden (Vero Beach, Fla.), Long received a cross from the left side of the box and headed in the equalizer.
The Sharks dominated the time of possession throughout the rest of the contest before Lelii scored on an unassisted game-winner. The Sharks displayed great defense in the final moments of the match as Lynn never threatened to tie the match in the last seven minutes.
The Sharks won the match while outshooting the Fighting Knights, 17-6. NSU had more shots-on-goal than Lynn’s total shot output with eight on target. Fuerst tallied two saves in her fourth win of the season.
With the victory, the Sharks now have eight points, putting them in sole possession of third place in the Sunshine State Conference heading into the weekend. With three conference matches left, the Sharks are four points behind No. 13 Rollins and five points behind No. 5 Saint Leo.
The Sharks will look to climb further up the table when they host Rollins this Friday, Oct. 14 at 6 p.m.
