FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern women’s volleyball team (4-14) will make the trip to Palm Beach Atlantic (16-2) Wednesday evening to face the Sailfish for the second time this season. The match is slated for a 7 p.m. start at Rubin Arena.
During the first meeting between the schools, PBA knocked off the Sharks in straight sets, 3-0. Mariela Quesada tallied 19 kills for the Sailfish, while Rachel Woodson (Jr., Rogers, Ark.), Danielle Graham (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) and Anabely Escarpita (Sr., Boca Raton, Fla.) each recorded five for the Sharks. NSU holds a slight edge in the all-time series with a 26-24 record against the Sailfish.
Escarpita and Graham, who generated a combined 70 kills in three matches last week, pace the Sharks in kills per set. Escarpita holds a slight margin with a 2.69 average, while Graham is at 2.6 heading into Wednesday’s contest.
Paige Boivin (Jr., Plainfield, Ill.)has remained among the nation’s elite with a 5.06 digs per set average, ranking her 36th across the country. Freshman Lauren Lewkowicz (Fr., Coral Springs, Fla.) has contributed both offensively and defensively, notching identical 1.54 kills and digs per set marks.
The Sailfish enter the match with a 16-2 record during the 2011 campaign with their only blemishes coming to Sunshine State Conference schools, No. 2 Tampa and Eckerd. PBA is currently riding a four-match win streak, having gone undefeated at the Pepsi Bash at the Beach tournament in which it hosted Oct. 7-8.
Quesada is leading the Sailfish with a 4.39 kills per set average. Lisa Jedlicka (2.64), Lanae Robinson (2.14) and Christina Alessi (2.13) supplement the Sailfish offense with kills per set averages over two. As a team, PBA averages 13.33 kills per set, while attacking at a .319 clip.
The Sailfish have also had success serving this season, recording an average of 2.75 service aces per set. Becca Acevedo has 43 aces this season for a 0.75 per set mark. Acevedo is also averaging 9.91 assists per set for PBA.
