Men’s Soccer Taken Down by No. 4 Rollins, 2-1

Quaye scores second goal of his career.

BOX SCORE

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –
The Nova Southeastern men’s soccer team (3-8-1, 1-5-0 SSC) battled to the end but could not pull out the victory against the No. 4 Rollins (10-1-0, 4-1-0 SSC) Tars Wednesday night at the NSU Soccer Complex, 2-1.

Facing the highest ranked team they’ve hosted in nearly three seasons, the Sharks cut a 2-0 deficit in half with ten minutes left but could not complete the comeback. Senior center back Alvin Quaye (West Ham, England) scored the second goal of his career. After a foul just outside the box, Halil Tozar (Fr., Berlin, Germany) sent a great cross off a free kick into the box for Quaye to head in. It was Quaye’s third header of the match with the first two nearly scoring.

The Sharks would have gone into overtime had they not allowed one of the quickest goals in the NSU Soccer Complex’s history. Just sixteen seconds into the match, Rollins’ Rafa Faria stole the ball and took a perfect shot from the top right corner of the box, sending a rocket into the top left corner of the net. Rollins would score again in the 22nd minute when a scramble in front of the goal allowed Rollins’ Nick Sowers to score in front of an open net.

The Sharks put forth limited offense in the first half as they only took two shots-on-goal to Rollins’ five. NSU would go on to double that amount in the second half as they began to pressure the nation’s fourth ranked team. Quaye eventually scored in the 81st minute, a result of a constant attack over the last 15 minutes of the match.

NSU’s best chance to tie came in the 86th minute when the home team was awarded a corner kick in which freshman Phillip Klaus (Lippstad, Germany) took. Andrea Spuntarelli (Fr., Rome, Italy) received a great ball into the box and fired, only to be recovered on a midair save by one of the nation’s top goalkeepers in Keneil Baker.

Rollins played smart soccer down the stretch as they held onto the ball after the goal kick as the clock winded down. In the end, the Sharks took 11 shots with six of them on target. It was the most shots and shots-on-goal the Sharks have recorded in three matches.

Andrea Giombetti (Fr., Rome, Italy) recorded six saves in the match, one short of his career high.

The Sharks will hit the road this Saturday, Oct. 15 as they face Florida Tech in Melbourne, Fla. at 3 p.m.
