Volleyball to “Take a Bite Out of Cancer” Friday Night

The Sharks will host Central Oklahoma Friday on Breast Cancer Awareness night and then Eckerd Saturday afternoon.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern volleyball team (4-16, 1-8 SSC) will play the second of two Sharks athletic contests as a part of the “Take a Bite Out of Cancer” program in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness month when it hosts Central Oklahoma (15-10) Friday at 7 p.m. at the NSU Arena. NSU will then host conference rival Eckerd (17-3, 7-2 SSC) Saturday at 4 p.m.

On Friday, the first 300 fans will receive a free pink “Take a Bite Out of Cancer” Sharks t-shirt. The Sharks will be accepting donations to support cancer research with all proceeds from the evening going to the American Cancer Society.

On the court, the Sharks will being looking to rebound after suffering a tough loss at Saint Leo Tuesday night. NSU evened the match at one set apiece when it rallied four down, 21-17, to take the second set, 26-24. The Sharks unfortunately went on to drop the next two sets to the Lions, falling 3-1.

Danielle Graham (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) paced the NSU offense with 14 kills in the match. On defense, the Sharks imitated many of their strong efforts from the early portion of the 2011 schedule, racking up nine blocks to the Lions seven. Paige Boivin (Jr., Plainfield, Ill.), who scooped up 19 digs against Saint Leo, continues to lead the Sunshine State Conference with a 4.94 digs per set average.

Central Oklahoma, a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, is slated to play three matches in the state of Florida this weekend. Following their match against the Sharks, the Bronchos will take on both Rollins and Palm Beach Atlantic Saturday, Oct. 22.

The Bronchos were winners of four straight, before dropping a five-set heartbreaker at Southeastern Oklahoma State. Alex Richardson leads Central Oklahoma offensively, recording 3.77 kills per set with a .206 attacking percentage. Juliette Smith has been a force at the net for the Bronchos, recording 1.15 blocks per set this season.

Eckerd makes the trip to Fort Lauderdale currently ranked second in the conference behind only undefeated Tampa (21-0, 8-0 SSC). The Tritons, currently the winners of eight straight, will take on St. Francis (Ill.) at home in their own breast cancer awareness night Oct. 20 before Saturday’s match at NSU.

Four Tritons student-athletes eclipse two kills per set on average with Lindsay Biggs leading the way at 2.68, while Arianna Chin (2.34), Alex Laton (2.3) and Ana de Olano (2.12) each average a pair of tallies. Eckerd’s Hallie Ward ranks fourth in the conference in digs per set with a 4.06 mark.
