BOX SCORE
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern volleyball team (5-17, 1-9 SSC) was looking for its second win in as many days, hosting Eckerd (19-3, 8-2 SSC) at the NSU Arena Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately, the Tritons, currently in second place in the Sunshine State Conference, proved to be too much, knocking off the Sharks, 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-18).
The match started well for NSU as
Sarah Shifflett (Fr., Boyton Beach, Fla.) notched a service ace to put the Sharks up 2-0. The Tritons kept the opening set close as the teams began trading points with the match knotting at 14-14.
Molly Sigerich (Sr., Downers Grove, Ill.) and
Danielle Graham (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) each scored three kills for the Sharks along the way.
Eckerd began to pull away though, with Taylor Whaley recording a kill to put the Tritons up three, 17-14. Lindsay Biggs would cap the set with her eighth kill to give Eckerd a 1-0 set advantage.
The Sharks again had an early lead in the second set, 4-3, as
Anabely Escarpita (Sr., Boca Raton, Fla.) secured a kill and service ace for the Sharks. The Tritons then began to pull away, creating a 9-6 lead, before
Kristina Eric (So., Bosnia) placed a nice kill in the back corner and Escarpita reeled off three of her own to even the match at 11-11.
Lauren Lewkowicz (Fr., Coral Springs, Fla.) registered her first kill of the set to tie it at 12-12, but the Tritons would take control from there. A service ace from Whaley put Eckerd ahead by four, 22-18, and Biggs ended the set with a trio of kills.
In the third set, it was the Sharks who rebounded from a slow start after Whaley and Biggs each added kills to their totals to put Eckerd up 4-2.
Samantha High (So., Naples, Fla.) and Graham each registered kills to spark the Sharks and then three blocks for the Sharks over the course of four points put NSU ahead, 12-10. Graham and Eric recorded solo blocks, while Graham paired with Escarpita for the third.
The familiar foes of Whaley and Biggs were there to counter the Sharks though, each notching kills to put Eckerd on top 19-18. High and Graham rose up for another Sharks block to tie the set, 19-19, but Ali McAlvany tallied a pair of kills and pushed Eckerd to a 25-23 set victory and a 3-0 match win.
Biggs finished with a match-high 18 kills, while attacking at a .457 clip. Escarpita paced the Sharks with 10 kills on a .500 hitting percentage. The Sharks once again out-blocked their opponent, recording nine total team blocks to Eckerd’s five as Sigerich finished with two solo blocks and two blocking assists.
