Women’s Soccer Looks to Advance in SSC Tournament Tuesday

The Sharks defeated Florida Tech 13 days prior.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –
The Nova Southeastern women’s soccer team (9-4-2, 3-3-2 SSC) will travel to Florida Tech (10-3-1, 4-3-1 SSC) for the second time in less than two weeks for a Sunshine State Conference Championship quarterfinals match at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1.

During their previous match on Oct. 19, Dilja Olafsdottir (Jr., Reykjavik, Iceland) netted the go-ahead goal during the 73rd-minute after a well-placed corner kick by Andi Burchfield (Fr., Greenville, S.C.). The goal was Olafsdottir’s third of the season and Burchfield’s assist was her sixth, tying Rachael Reid (Sr., Indianapolis, Ind.) for the team lead in assist.

At the time Florida Tech was ranked 21st in the country by the National Soccer Coaches Athletic Association and was ranked third in the NCAA Division II South Region. The Sharks were unranked by the NSCAA and were ranked fourth in the NCAA Division II South Region. As of Oct. 26, the Panthers are still ranked third in the south region with a record of 7-3-1 against regional opponents and the Sharks slipped to fifth with a 7-4-2 record against south region opponents.

Since their meeting thirteen days earlier the Sharks dropped their lone contest, 2-0, to Tampa on Oct. 23. Prior to the start of the game the Sharks honored the careers of Shanoska Young (Kingston, Jamaica), Reid, Lindsey Nowland (Cape Coral, Fla.), Sarah Wareham (Davie, Fla.) and Chrissy Hy (Weston, Fla.) for senior day.

The Sharks were unable to find the net against Tampa, but have done so regularly this season averaging 2.53 goals per game, second best average in the SSC. The Sharks are led offensively by Malin Broberg (So., Stockholm, Sweden), she has netted seven goals and tallied four assists for 18 points.

Hy (5-2) has started the last three games in goal for the Sharks, including her first shutout of the season recorded against Florida Tech. She has played 637:01 minutes, collected 25 saves and has a goals against average of 1.55 per game.

Since playing the Sharks the Panthers put together a two-game win-streak, defeating Lynn, 2-1, and Eckerd, 5-0. Team leading score’s Kelly Whittaker and Casey Lademann each netted a goal during the win-streak, giving them both five goals for the season. 

Mist Eliasdottir (10-3-1) has played all 1287:41 minutes in goal for the Panthers. She has recorded 35 saves and has a goals against average of 0.56, third-best in the SSC.

The Sharks are 7-2-1 all-time against the Panthers, the winner of the match on Tuesday will advance to the SSC Semifinals Friday Nov. 4, against number two-seed Rollins with the match to be played at Saint Leo. Saint Leo ended the regular season as SSC regular season champion and will host the final four of the 2011 SSC women’s soccer tournament.
