BOX SCORE
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern volleyball team (7-20, 3-12 SSC) lost in straight sets Friday night to Florida Southern (17-12, 11-5 SSC) at the NSU Arena.
The Mocs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead before
Danielle Graham (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) got the Sharks on the board with a kill. FSC pushed the lead to 6-1 by capturing the next four points.
Jordan Pappas (Jr., Naperville, Ill.), Graham and
Anabely Escarpita (Sr., Boca Raton, Fla.) each tallied kills in the next few rallies to keep the Sharks in the set early, but FSC gained a seven-point advantage, 16-9, bringing out a NSU timeout.
The break in play did little to stunt the Mocs momentum, as FSC captured the first set 25-15, capped by a Kate Stromberg kill.
The second set proved to be a mirror image of the first as Pappas fed Graham for two early kills to keep the Sharks within one, but the Mocs would begin to create separation midway through the second, gaining a seven-point lead at 19-12. The Mocs got a pair of service aces from Ali Shaykan and took the second set, 25-15.
Samantha High (So., Naples, Fla.) provided an offensive spark in the third set, recording four kills to put NSU ahead 8-6 and force FSC to use a timeout.
Kelly McMahon (Jr., Madison, Wis.) gave NSU its largest lead at 13-9 with a well-placed service ace.
The Mocs would rally though, eventually evening the match, 16-16, behind a Lauren Huber kill. McMahon notched another service ace late in the match for the Sharks, but it was not enough to thwart the Mocs, as FSC took to set 25-21, and the match, 3-0.
FSC’s Erin Callahan converted a match-high 12 kills, while Graham was one back to lead the Sharks with 11. Each team tallied three team blocks with Escarpita recording a solo block and Pappas registering two blocking assists.
