FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Head coach LeAnn Freeland has announced the signing of Khadejra Young, a senior at Nova High School in Davie, Fla.
“Khadejra is a versatile player who excels both on the court and in the classroom. She is a two-time team captain for Nova High School and helped lead her team to a 21-6 record during her junior season,” says coach Freeland of Young. “Because of her athleticism and competitive nature, Khadejra defends every position from the point guard to post for Coach Jason Hively. She runs a lot of point guard at Nova and can score in a variety of ways, but is most effective off the dribble creating her own shot, but also has a knack for scoring after securing an offensive rebound.”
Young, a 5-7 guard, averaged 7.6 rebounds and 6.8 points per game as a junior for the Titans. She also dished out 2.5 assists and averaged 2.7 steals per contest. She reached double-figures in scoring in seven games last seasons, while also recording two double-doubles.
“After taking the head coaching position at NSU, one of my goals for our staff was to get to know the best programs in the local area. One of our targets was Nova High School, because of their past success, strong fundamentals and emphasis on team play,” commented coach Freeland regarding her early recruiting philosophy. We saw their AAU team play numerous times over the summer and Khadejra caught our attention immediately because her strong will.”
“Simply stated, Khadejra is a winner. We are excited to announce her signing today and hope to continue to keep the best local talent at home.”
Young is the first signee of the 2012-13 class for Freeland and the NSU staff.
Freeland’s first recruiting class produced immediate results the opening weekend of play, with freshman Danielle Robinson (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) averaging 20.5 ppg through the first weekend of play and junior transfer Meixandra Porter (Chantilly, Va.) chipping in 13.5 ppg through the first two games. Young will join and look to contribute next season to the young core that Freeland and her staff are building at NSU.
