FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 24 Nova Southeastern baseball team (7-2) will look to go 2-0 in non-conference games against Sunshine State Conference opponents as they travel to Melbourne, Fla. on Tuesday, Feb. 22 to take on the Florida Tech Panthers (7-4) at 2 p.m.
The Sharks have tied the program record for the best nine-game start in school history and have a chance to begin the year 8-2 for the second time in three seasons. This past weekend, the Sharks won two out of three games against Valdosta State, the reigning Gulf South Conference champions. The Sharks took the first game, 10-6, and won the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader in 11 innings, 3-2.
It wasn’t all roses for NSU as they finished the weekend losing to the Blazers, 14-1, in the final game. VSU scored eight runs in the second inning and never looked back. Despite the loss, the Sharks still took the weekend series and made their first appearance in the national poll this season. They also enter Tuesday’s game ranked fifth in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association South Regional Poll.
Florida Tech had a strong start to the season and ranked 26th in the nation after sweeping Valdosta State. The Panthers fell out of the national rankings as they went 2-2 this past week, falling to Palm Beach Atlantic, 8-4, and dropping one of three games against Barry. However, the Panthers still received one vote in the latest national poll and a win against the Sharks could send them back to the top-30.
Historically, the Sharks have not fared well against Florida Tech as they have a 7-18 all-time record against them. NSU went 2-3 against Florida Tech last season.
