FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern baseball team (1-0) is set to play its first weekend series of the 2011 season against Albany State at the NSU Baseball Complex. The first game is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 3 at 6 p.m. with a doubleheader slated for the following day at noon.

In the Sharks’ first outing of the season, new head coach Greg Brown started his tenure at NSU with a win over Northwood, 2-1. The Sharks got a solid start from their senior ace Isaac Hicks (Sr., Fort Myers, Fla.) who struck out seven batters in seven innings. He only allowed one hit, an infield single that took a bad bounce. Shark fans also got a glimpse of preseason All-South Region selection Sean Albury, who picked up his first save of the season.

NSU also put together a solid offensive performance and compiled nine hits. Dusty Maggs (Sr., Satellite Beach, Fla.), Nikko Echevarria (Jr., Abqaib, Saudi Arabia) and newcomer Andrew Durden (Sr., Port St. Lucie, Fla.) all had multiple hits. Durden’s second hit of the game was a home run over the left field fence in only his third at bat as a Shark. Unfortunately, the Sharks only scored two runs as they left nine runners on base.

"This is an important series for us as we head into three game set versus a Regional opponent that has post season experience," said Brown. "I am looking for us to continue to build off our game versus Northwood by pounding the zone and playing solid defense. This will be an early test for the club and I anticipate our players being prepared for the challenge ahead."

The weekend series will not only mark NSU’s first ever game against Albany State, but also against any current Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference member. Albany State enters the game without a win as they dropped both games of a doubleheader against Edward Waters.
