FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –
After starting the season 4-0, the Nova Southeastern baseball team will step up the competition this week with back-to-back games against Barry (3-1) and Palm Beach Atlantic (2-2). The Sharks take on the Buccaneers in Miami Shores, Fla. on Tuesday, Feb. 8 at 6 p.m. in a non-conference game before returning to the confines of the NSU Baseball Complex to face Palm Beach Atlantic on Wednesday, Feb. 9 at 6 p.m.

The Sharks enter the week after a home sweep of Albany State, a team that advanced to the NCAA South Regionals last season. NSU dominated the series and won by a total scoring margin of 21 runs. In the first two games of the series, the Sharks scored 10 or more runs.

The sweep brought the Sharks to 4-0, tying the best start the Sharks have had since 2001. A win against the Bucs would mark the first time the Sharks have ever started 5-0.

The past week highlighted newcomers and veteran Sharks alike. Isaac Hicks (Sr., Fort Myers, Fla.) had a great start to the season against Northwood as he threw seven innings, struck out seven batters, and only gave up one hit. He also improved his winning streak to 10 games as he has not picked up a loss since the 2009 season.

Newcomer Andrew Durden (Sr., Port St. Lucie, Fla.) had an exceptional first week as a Shark and was named SSC Player of the Week. Hitting leadoff, Durden batted .562 with three RBI and eight runs. He hit safely in every game and notched multiple hits in three. He also scored at least one run in every contest, while driving in runs in three outings. Posting a 1.125 slugging percentage, Durden powered five extra base hits with three doubles and two home runs. He recorded a .562 on-base percentage and did not miss a beat playing centerfield.

Reaching 5-0 will be a challenge for the Sharks as Barry has had NSU’s number over the years. The Sharks have a 24-39-1 record all-time against Barry and have lost eight of their last 10 games against the Buccaneers. Barry opened the season this past weekend by winning three out of four games against Georgia Southwestern.

The Sharks have had a bit more success against PBA as they are 42-11-1 all-time against the Sailfish. PBA got the best of NSU last season as they won three out of five games against the Sharks last season. The Sailfish enter the game with a two game winning streak as they beat Northwood in both games of a doubleheader Saturday.
