FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern baseball team (13-7) will play its last two out-of-region games of the season as they face No. 10 Franklin Pierce (9-1) on Tuesday, March 15 before playing St. Michael’s (1-1) on Wednesday, March 16. Both games will be held at the NSU Baseball Complex and will begin at 6 p.m.
The Sharks are riding high after taking two out of three games against the then sixth ranked Tampa Spartans this past weekend (6-4, 7-6, and 7-8). The series victory put NSU at 2-1 in the Sunshine State Conference, a game behind the Barry Buccaneers who swept Florida Tech this weekend. While the offense posted huge numbers against the preseason SSC favorite, the defense was spot on as the Sharks did not commit an error over the entire series.
Despite beating one of the top baseball programs in the NCAA Division II, the Sharks were shunned by the coaches in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II National Poll. After beating the sixth ranked team, the Sharks did not even receive a single vote in the coach’s poll after receiving four votes last week. College Baseball Lineup ranked the Sharks 29th in the country behind Florida Tech (17th), Tampa (13th), and Florida Southern (11th).
Both Franklin Pierce and St. Michael’s will provide quality reps before the Sharks host Florida Tech, a team they let slip by earlier in the year. As the 10th ranked team in the nation, Franklin Pierce will provide the Sharks with an opportunity to earn another victory over a nationally elite team.
The Ravens won their first nine games of the season before losing to Adelphi, 5-1. This season, Franklin Pierce has averaged eight runs per game and has only given up more than three runs once. According to College Baseball Lineup, “the Ravens best contest of the year to date will be this Tuesday when they play Nova Southeastern.”
The Sharks are 6-3 against the Ravens all-time, including two victories against them last season. The Sharks are currently on a three game winning streak against Franklin Pierce and have not lost to them since the 2008 season.
St. Michael’s does not have the national reputation that Franklin Pierce has but should still provide a good test for the Sharks. The Purple Knights are 1-1 on the season as they played both their games at the Palm Beach Challenge this weekend, defeating St. Thomas Aquinas, 3-2, after falling to UMass-Lowell, 2-1. From March 13 through March 19, the Purple Knights will play a total of 11 games. Last season, NSU pummeled St. Michael’s, 17-0, in the program’s first game against the Purple Knights.
