FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – After winning seven of the last eight games, the Nova Southeastern baseball team (15-7, 2-1 SSC) will look to avenge an out-of-conference loss to Florida Tech (16-8, 2-4 SSC) as the Sharks host a Sunshine State Conference weekend series against the Panthers at the NSU Baseball Complex beginning Friday, March 18 at 6 p.m.
The Sharks are carrying plenty of momentum into their series against the Panthers as they are 2-0 on the week after taking a weekend series against then sixth ranked Tampa, 2-1. In that series, the Sharks came out and controlled the first two games to clinch the series win. In their lone 8-7 loss to the Spartans, the Sharks were in position to make a comeback as they had the tying run in scoring position in each of the last three innings.
After taking down the sixth ranked team in the nation, the Sharks were shunned by the nation’s coaches as they did not receive a vote in the national poll. NSU responded to the critics by dominating No. 10 Franklin Pierce at home this past Tuesday, 11-3. In the Sharks’ last outing, they defeated St. Michael’s at home, 13-4, while only fielding two regular starters.
With three wins over top-ten nationally ranked teams over the last five games, the Sharks will have a chance to redeem an early season loss against the Panthers. Back on Feb. 22, the Sharks put 16 Panthers on base through walks and hit-by-pitches and still lost by a single run, 6-5.
However, the Panthers will see a much improved team as NSU will have
Anthony Angulo (Jr., Homestead, Fla.) and
Daniel Petitbon (Jr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), two players who were sidelined earlier in the year against Florida Tech. Since returning to the Sharks right after the loss to Florida Tech, Angulo has scored seven runs, drawn eight walks and held an on-base percentage of .419. In seven games, Petitbon has hit two home runs while maintaining a .391 average. The left fielder has six runs and eight RBI while his team has gone 6-1 when he has played.
Historically, the Sharks have not fared well against Florida Tech as they have a 7-19 all-time record against them. NSU went 2-3 against Florida Tech last season.
