FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Coming off a sweep of Rollins, the Nova Southeastern baseball team (20-8) will look to make up for an early season loss this Tuesday, March 29 as the Sharks take on the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish (17-13) in West Palm Beach, Fla. at 6 p.m.
The Sharks enter their out-of-conference game after taking three on the road against the Rollins Tars. The Sharks came out and destroyed the Tars with their bats in game one, winning 14-9, before dominating on the mound over games two and three. Starters
Sean Tighe (Jr., Hobe Sound, Fla.) and
Nick Avila (Sr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) combined for 13 innings pitched without allowing an earned run.
For scraping their way towards a sweep on the road against a team that advanced to the NCAA South Regionals last season, the Sharks earned another vote in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Coaches Poll, bringing their total to two votes. However, the Sharks are climbing the ranks in the
CollegeBaseballLineup.com poll as the website pegged the Sharks at 16th in the nation, three spots higher than last week.
College Baseball Lineup writes, “The Sharks have been one of DII baseball’s top teams as of late and demonstrated once again they are among the nation's elite as they swept three from Rollins in Winter Park. NSU has been deadly on the basepaths, outstealing opposition nearly 3:1.”
The Sharks, who have won 11 of their last 13 games, now get to rewrite an early season misstep as they travel to PBA. In his first start of the season, Tighe picked up the loss after allowing three runs, only one of which was earned, over six innings. PBA’s Logan Thomas earned the win by striking out seven and limiting the Sharks to three hits over six innings. The Shark offense struggled against the Sailfish as the top of the lineup went 1-for-11 with no runs. This was the first game this season in which the Sharks combined for less than nine hits.
Since the Sailfish upset the Sharks, PBA has played close to .500 baseball as they have gone 14-12 with wins over Flagler, Saint Leo, and Eckerd. Thomas has been a lights-out pitcher for them this season as he holds a 2.65 ERA over 54.1 innings pitched with 50 strikeouts.
NSU will look to extend a five-game winning streak before returning to Sunshine State Conference play this weekend against Eckerd. A win Tuesday will tie the season series with PBA, an important mark as the Sharks attempt to hold a winning record against any regional opponent left on the schedule.
