FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Coming off two wins against St. Rose, the Nova Southeastern baseball team (10-6) will face off against another Northeast-10 squad in Southern New Hampshire (4-4) at the NSU Baseball Complex on Tuesday, March 8 at 6 p.m.
The Sharks enter the game after starting a new winning streak against the St. Rose Golden Knights this past Saturday. In the first game, the Sharks pummeled the Golden Knights after they scored a season-high 18 runs and won, 18-5. Four Sharks hit home runs in that outing while every starter scored at least one run.
The second game was a different scenario as the Sharks fought back from a 5-0 deficit to win, 8-5. In the seven inning game, the Sharks trailed, 5-1, in the bottom of the sixth and scored seven runs in the side to clinch the team’s 10th win.
Luis Penate (Sr., Miami, Fla.) had a solid doubleheader, batting .500 over two games with five RBI, three runs and three stolen bases.
After one of the strongest starts in program history, the Sharks faced adversity as they lost five out of six games against the likes of Valdosta State, Florida Tech, and West Alabama. The Sharks fell to 8-6 and out of the national rankings, and desperately needed the two wins they earned over the weekend.
With the train once again moving in the right direction, the Sharks will have one more game before beginning Sunshine State Conference play as they host No. 6 Tampa this coming weekend. However, the Penmen are not a tune up opponent. SNH has come out to a 4-4 start to the year and has won four out of their last five games. Although their offense has struggled at the start of the season, they have been strong on the mound with a team ERA of 3.64. They have also been a tough team to run on as they’ve thrown out 47 percent of all runners.
NSU will be hoping to increase the all-time series against SNH to 3-0 with a win. Last season, the Sharks beat the Penmen twice at home, winning the first game in close fashion, 5-4, and winning an offensive battle the second time, 13-8.
Sean Tighe (Jr., Hoe Sound, Fla.) pitched in both games with success, totaling three shutout innings with three strikeouts in relief appearances.
Tyler Redding (So., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) is expected to make the start for the Sharks against the team he made his NSU debut against last season. In the team’s 13-8 victory over the Penmen, Redding closed the show and struck three batters out in the ninth inning. This season Redding has been one of the team’s strongest relief pitchers as he has accumulated a perfect ERA over 5.2 innings while allowing only two hits.
