FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern baseball team (27-13) will take a break from Sunshine State Conference play this weekend as they face the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish (23-18) in a three-game series. The three-game set will begin with a single game at the NSU Baseball Complex on Friday, April 22 at 6 p.m. The series will conclude with a doubleheader in Lake Worth, Fla. on Saturday, April 23 at 1 p.m.
The Sharks enter the game on a high as they come off an 11th inning victory over No. 8 Barry on the road Tuesday, April 19, 13-12. The win clinched the season series against the Bucs, 3-2. The next day, the Sharks debuted at fifth in the NCAA South Regional rankings, a ranking that may improve due to the Sharks’ win over SSC-leading Barry.
Winners of four straight games, the Sharks will be looking to tie up some loose ends as they play a Sailfish team that has defeated NSU twice this season. In the Shark’s first game against PBA, the Sharks carried their first ever 5-0 record into the game but were shutdown, 3-2. Sailfish ace Logan Thomas pitched a stellar game over the first six innings by striking out seven batters. The Sharks only picked up one hit against the PBA bullpen over the last three innings.
The Sharks held a five-game winning streak when they played PBA on March 29 but the Sailfish still escaped with a 4-2 win. The Sailfish pounced on the Sharks early as they scored all four of their runs in the first four innings. Despite two standup doubles from
Dusty Maggs (Sr., Satellite Beach, Fla.), the Shark offense struggled once again with only six hits in the game. The bullpen of PBA did their job in the second game as well, holding the Sharks to two hits over the final three innings.
The Sharks have now lost five of the last seven games against PBA over the last two seasons. This does not reflect the history between these two teams as NSU holds a 42-13-1 record against the Sailfish. The Sharks have been so dominant against PBA in the past that they went on a 13-game winning streak against the Sailfish that ended last season. Friday night, the Sharks will look to avoid losing three straight games against PBA for the second time in program history. The Sharks have never lost four straight to their neighbors to the North.
The Sailfish were left out of the regional top-10 but could get a boost with multiple wins against NSU. The Sailfish have two wins against NSU along with victories over No. 8 Barry and No. 12 Florida Southern. With Florida Southern facing off against No. 18 Tampa in a critical regional matchup, the Sharks will need to be on top of their game in order to maintain their ground in the South Region top-5.
