BOX SCORE
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern baseball team (31-14, 15-5 SSC) took the first game of a scheduled doubleheader against the No. 13 Florida Southern Mocs (27-13, 11-6 SSC), 4-3 (10th inn.), Friday at the NSU Baseball Complex before inclement weather postponed the final game of the series. The Sharks, who have already clinched the series win with two victories, will finish the three-game set Sunday, May 1 at 3 p.m.
Dusty Maggs (Sr., Satellite Beach, Fla.) hit a sacrifice fly to left field in the 10th inning, driving in the walk-off run to seal the series victory.
Daniel Petitbon (Jr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) hit a leadoff ground-rule double in the frame and scored the walk-off run. Overall,
Nikko Echevarria (Jr., Abqaib, Saudi Arabia) led the Sharks as he went 3-for-5 with a game-high two RBI.
Pitching in the final home game of his career,
Nick Avila (Sr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) started and had a solid game. He went 8.2 innings pitched and struck out six batters. He also held the Mocs to one run until the ninth inning.
Sean Albury (Sr., Nassau, Bahamas) (6-1) picked up his team-high sixth win by holding the Mocs to two hits in 1.2 innings pitched.
The Sharks put themselves on the board by scoring three runs in the second inning. After two quick outs, Maggs picked up his first hit with a double to right field. FSC’s Stephen Batman then gave up three straight walks to load the bases and give the Sharks a free pass home. Echevarria registered both of his RBI as he drilled a single through the left side, giving the Sharks a 3-1 lead.
The Sharks would go scoreless over the next seven innings but never trailed in the game. FSC scored one run in the fourth and entered the ninth inning with a two-run deficit. FSC’s Colin Kish hit a single to left field that scored one run and put the tying runner in scoring position. With two outs on the board, Zach Maggard earned his first hit with a shallow blooper to right field.
Areo Regoli (Jr., Homestead, Fla.) almost made it to the ball before it dropped a yard in front of him, allowing the game-tying run to score.
After Petitibon hit his ground-rule double to centerfield in the 10th,
Matt Seese (Sr., Ocala, Fla.) advanced him to third on a sacrifice bunt he almost beat out. Regoli was intentionally walked before
Anthony Angulo (Jr., Homestead, Fla.) hit a groundball to third base. As the Mocs attempted the out at home plate, both Petibon and Regoli were able to escape run downs during the exchange to load the bases. Maggs ended the game by blasting the ball into deep left field as Petitbon cruised home to win the game.
The Sharks, who are now 7-3 against top-15 nationally ranked opponents, will aim for the sweep of FSC this Sunday, April 29 at 3 p.m. at the NSU Baseball Complex.
