Baseball Stumbles in First South Regional Tournament Game Against No. 11 Barry

Sharks Held to Four Hits in First NCAA Postseason Appearance

BOX SCORE

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –
The Nova Southeastern baseball team (33-17) dropped its first ever South Region Tournament game as they lost to the No. 11 Barry Buccaneers (35-15), 6-0, on Thursday, May 19 in Pensacola, Fla. The Sharks are now 3-3 against Barry on the season.

The Sharks were held to four hits in the game and had only one runner reach third base. NSU fell victim to Barry’s ace in Manny Rodriguez (5-3) who pitched a complete-game shutout. Rodriguez threw 125 pitches and struck out seven batters.

Sean Tighe (Jr., Hobe Sound, Fla.) (5-6) pitched lights out over the first four innings where he held the Bucs to two infield singles. However, Tighe gave up all of Barry’s runs in the fifth and sixth innings, which put the Bucs on top. Tighe ended the game with nine strikeouts. Torey Ekey (Sr., Merritt Island, Fla.) and Tyler Redding (So., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) combined to shutout the Bucs over the last 2.2 innings pitched while striking out four batters.

Aside from Rodriguez, Barry won the game by playing great defense in the field as the Bucs robbed the Sharks on numerous plays. This was most evident in the second inning when the Sharks had their first opportunity to score as Andrew Durden (Sr., Port St. Lucie, Fla.) reached base on a leadoff single to left field. With an out on the board, first baseman Dean Green and left fielder Lyndon Coleman each made diving plays to keep the Sharks scoreless.

Areo Regoli (Jr., Homestead, Fla.) and Luis Penate (Sr., Miami, Fla.) posted half of NSU’s hits in the seventh, which put multiple runners on base for the only time all game. Anthony Angulo (Jr., Homestead, Fla.) and Blake Boyd (So., Jupiter, Fla.) both put the ball in play but Barry made great plays to keep the runners from advancing. The Sharks were hitless over the last two innings.

The loss puts the Sharks in a position in which they have to win six straight games in order to win the South Region Championship. NSU will now face Stillman Friday, May 20 in Pensacola, Fla. at 2:15 p.m. ET. If they win, they will face the loser in the game between North Alabama and Harding on Saturday, May 21.
