BOX SCORE
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - The No. 21 Nova Southeastern women’s soccer team (4-1-0) lost its first game of the year, 5-2, to Columbus State (4-1-1) in a neutral site game at Flagler College.
The difference on the scoreboard does not tell how close the contest was pitting a top-25 team against another team which received top-25 votes the week entering the game.
The game was back and forth as the Sharks responded to each of the Cougars’ goals tying the game at one, and two, with goals by
Shanoska Young at 20:33 and
Sierra Lelii at 47:23.
The game remained tied until Columbus St. goalkeeper Mary Mancin punted the ball three-quarters of the field causing a skirmish for the ball resulting in Sharks goalkeeper
Michelle Fuerst coming out of goal to secure the ball and suffering an injury.
With Fuerst on the ground and injured on the play, Jarci Carithers kicked the ball over her and into the back of the net at 87:02. Goalkeeper
Chrissy Hy came back into the game for the injured Fuerst and with the Sharks in shock, Cougars Emily Husted and Kiana Nicholson quickly added two more goals over the next minute.
Fuerst (0-1-0) was credited with the loss for the Sharks after playing 42:07, making five saves and allowing one goal. Hy started the game for the Sharks, she allowed three goals and made four saves in 47:53.
Mary Mancin was credited with the win after making five saves and allowing two goals for the Cougars in 90-minutes in goal for the Cougars.
