FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern women’s volleyball team (3-9, 1-3) jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, downing conference foe Lynn, 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-14). The victory was the first home and conference win for the Sharks this season.
The Sharks opened up an early 5-2 lead behind kills from
Anabely Escarpita (Sr., Boca Raton, Fla.),
Kristina Eric(So., Sokolac, Bosnia),
Molly Sigerich (Sr., Downers Grove, Ill.) and a service ace from
Jordan Pappas (Jr., Naperville, Ill.). A timeout from the visiting Fighting Knights did little to stop the Sharks momentum as
Rachel Woodson (Jr., Rogers, Ark.) notched her first two kills of the set following the stop in play.
Lynn would tie the match, 11-11, but the Sharks pulled away, building a 20-16 advantage after Eric knocked home a kill off a
Sarah Shifflett (Fr., Boyton Beach, Fla.) set.
Lauren Lewkowicz (Fr., Coral Springs, Fla.) and Eric each added another kill, while Escarpita tallied two more to give NSU a 24-18 lead. A Daniel Graham (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) service ace gave the Sharks a 25-18 victory and 1-0 set lead.
The Fighting Knights jumped out to an early lead in the second set, 8-4, with Mandy McIntosh recording her only service ace of the match. The Sharks battled back though as Escarpita would nail three consecutive kills to knot the match, 15-15. A combination of Lynn errors and kills from Sigerich, Lewkowicz and Graham gave NSU the set, 25-20.
The Sharks owned the third set, never trailing at any point. NSU opened up a 3-0 early lead with a kill from Sigerich and service ace by Graham. Woodson would add two more kills to her total and Shifflett would register a service ace to keep the Sharks lead at three, 6-3.
Woodson’s seventh kill of the match would push the Sharks lead to eight, 19-11 late in the set. Graham would finish off the match for the Sharks with three consecutive kills, bringing her tally to seven, giving NSU a decisive 25-14 set victory and 3-0 match win.
The Sharks out-attacked the Fighting Knights, .306 - 0.98, led by Escarpita, who tallied a match-high 15 kills. Woodson finished the match with a .583 hitting percentage, while Lewkowicz attacked at a .286 clip with eight kills. Graham also notched eight kills to go with three service aces in the match. Eric, who had four kills, paced the Sharks with 19 assists. As a team, the Sharks registered 44 kills to the Fighting Knights 26.
