BOX SCORE
MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Despite outshooting Barry (4-4-0, 1-1-0 SSC) 20 to seven, the Nova Southeastern women’s soccer team (6-2-1, 0-1-1 SSC) was unable to capitalize and defeat Barry, losing 3-0.
The Bucs jumped out to a two goal lead scoring on two unfortunate plays for the Sharks. The first goal came after 8:21 when Sharks goalkeeper
Michelle Fuerst (Jr., Armonk, N.Y.) (2-2-1) misjudged a difficult ball leaving the net empty for Malissa Madrid to score her fifth goal of the season. Madrid is the Bucs leading scorer on the season; she was assisted by Emma Karp on the play.
The second goal for the Bucs came in the 37th minute when a Barry player collided with Fuerst a few feet from goal on a rebound, shaking Fuerst up and allowing Morgan Garcia to score her first goal of the season.
Trailing by two, the Sharks remained aggressive and had several opportunities to get on the board, but were the victim of bad luck. A perfect example of the Sharks misfortune took place when
Malin Broberg (So., Stockholm, Sweden) fought through Bucs defenders from the right, avoided Bucs goalkeeper Melissa Toledo, and with the keeper in her dust placed her shot attempt off of a Buccaneer defender instead of in the net.
The first 27 minutes of the second-period played out like the first, as the Sharks dominated the ball and squandered away several scoring opportunities. Eventually the Bucs would score their third goal of the game at 72:26.
Fuerst was credited with the loss for the Sharks after making three saves and allowing three goals in 90 minutes of goalkeeping.
Melissa Toledo (2-1) was credited with the win after shutting out the high powered Sharks and making nine saves in 90 minutes. Toledo has been strong for the Bucs of late, allowing one goal in her last three starts.
The Sharks will seek its first conference win at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept.1 at Eckerd.
