FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern women’s volleyball team (3-10, 1-3) is set to face two Sunshine State Conference opponents in Rollins and Florida Southern this weekend. The Sharks will start with a Friday, 7 p.m. match against the Tars and move on to face the Mocs Saturday at 4 p.m.
The Sharks head into the weekend looking to overcome a tough loss to Palm Beach Atlantic Wednesday at the NSU Arena. The Sailfish doubled-up the Sharks in kills, 42-21, and won the match in three sets.
The Sharks, who have relied on defense through much of the season, have managed just five total kills in their last two matches, after compiling 99 through the first 11. NSU will need to regain its dominance at the net if it looks to knock off 9-7 Rollins and 8-5 Florida Southern, who both received votes for the national top-25 this week.
Rollins hosts the Sharks boasting a 9-7, 2-2 SSC record thus far in 2011. The Tars have wins in conference over Eckerd and Saint Leo, but have dropped matches to Florida Southern and Tampa.
Rollins is currently second in the SSC in kills (14.07), hitting percentage (.271) and assists (12.96) per set. Sophomore Megan Hodges leads the conference with a 4.54 kills per set mark, while teammate Kiana Parks leads the way with 10.96 assists per set. Camille Indest and Jessica Wilson each rank in the conference’s top-five in hitting percentage at .422 and .346, respectively.
Florida Southern is ranked second in the SSC, holding an 8-5, 3-2 record. The Mocs have knocked off Rollins, Barry and Florida Tech during its first five conference matches.
Kendall Wilde is fifth in the SSC with 0.35 service aces per set (14 in 40 sets). The Mocs have a balanced offensive attack as Erin Callahan (2.22), Lauren Huber (2.14), Kate Stromberg (2.09), Anne Pietkiewicz (2.08) and Gabby Fernandez (2.00) all average over two kills per set.
