Anthony Jack scores team’s first goal of the season

BOX SCORE

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –
The Nova Southeastern men’s soccer team took their first loss of the season Sunday afternoon at the NSU Soccer Complex as they fell to the West Florida Argonauts, 2-1.

Anthony Jack (Fr., Stevanage, England) scored his team’s first goal of the season in the 61st minute to tie the game at 1-1. Jack made a heads up play to score the goal as he cleaned up the rebound off of James Pucci’s (Fr., Carrara, Italy) shot that bounced off West Florida goalkeeper Stuart McCrory. The Argos would answer back four minutes later as Junior Prevalus scored the game-winner.

The game started out as a defensive battle as both teams held the other in check during the first half. The Argos had nine shots in the first half but only three of which were on goal as Andrea Giombetti (Fr., Rome, Italy) gave Shark fans little reason to worry. Halil Tozar (Fr., Berlin, Germany) was the only Shark to get a shot off in the opening period.

The action turned up in the second half as UWF scored within the first minute of the period. Nick Salafrio took advantage of a defensive mistake and slipped the ball to Mathew Aldred, who scored his first goal of the season. Although the outcome did not change, momentum began to shift towards the Sharks’ favor as they controlled the ball for much of the second half.

NSU capitalized off its time of possession in the second half when Jack scored his goal in the 61st minute. The Sharks attacked as Pucci recieved the ball in the box and attempted to score. McCrory made a diving save that sent the ball to Jack who was in the perfect position to strike.

The Sharks would fall behind again in the 65th minute as Prevalus scored seven feet in front of the goal. The Sharks increased their attack down the stretch as they had multiple chances to equalize but never converted. Giombetti, who has started in both games for the Sharks, picked up the first loss of his career.

The men’s soccer team will get set for a road trip to Greenville, Tenn. as the Sharks take on two teams from the South Atlantic Conference, starting with Carson Newman this Friday, Sept. 9 at 5 p.m.
