FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern University student-athletes recently attended an educational seminar "Drug Free Sport" presented by Kathy J. Turpin, Ph.D. at the Don Taft University Center Sunday.
Turpin is the director of collegiate drug testing for Drug Free Sport and oversees the administration of drug-testing programs for Drug Free Sport's 200+ collegiate clients across the country. She spoke to the Sharks about the dangers of over-the-counter drugs and educated them on the pitfalls of taking dangerous supplements.
"It was a very educational event that opened our eyes to many substances that can be found over-the-counter but are not legal," said senior men's basketball captain Teddy Tassy (Port-au-Prince, Haiti). "It showed us that many drugs look like they can help but are actually very harmful. It was very informative."
Turpin's professional history includes more than 25 years as a collegiate athletics administrator and coach. She has been a frequent presenter on NCAA compliance issues, SWA professional growth, and has served on numerous conference and NCAA committees including the NCAA women's basketball rules committee, and is a past chair of the NCAA Division II women's basketball committee.
