FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern softball team is set to open up the 2012 campaign Wednesday when it hosts the Webber International Lady Warriors at the AD Griffin Sports Complex. The first game of the doubleheader is slated for 5 p.m.
The Sharks’ roster features 19 student-athletes this season. Nine players return from last season’s 32-20 team, including All-American
Laura Saladrigas (Jr., Hollywood, Fla.) and All-SSC selections,
Katie Kelton (Sr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) and
Gina Bondarenko (So., Pembroke Pines, Fla.). Saladrigas drove in a a team-high 51 RBI in 2011, as well as leading the Sharks in batting average (.389), hits (61), doubles (17), triples (4) and home runs (5).
Six freshmen and four transfers join the nine returners to make up the largest roster under head coach Lesa Boneé’s tenor at NSU.
Webber International, a member of The Sun Conference in the NAIA, finished last season with a 13-33 record. The Lady Warriors competed against SSC schools a total of 16 times in 2011, playing to a 2-14 record with wins over Florida Tech and Eckerd.
NSU and WIU have met 36 times with the Sharks holding a 25-11 advantage in the all-time series. The schools last met in 2002 when the Sharks won 3-of-4 meetings against the Lady Warriors.
The AD Griffin Sports Complex epitomized the friendly confines of a home field as the Sharks went 14-4 there last season. The Sharks are scheduled to play 24 of their 56 games at home this season, including the final eight at the end of April.
