FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern men’s soccer team (6-5-0, 2-3-0 SSC) dropped a home match against the Eckerd Tritons (6-5-1, 3-2-1 SSC), 3-1, Saturday at the NSU Soccer Complex.
The Sharks were plagued by penalty kicks, as they fell behind twice in the second half after fouls in their penalty box. The Sharks’ only goal of the match came in the 66th minute.
Mattia Marzetti (Fr., Rome, Italy) played a great ball from deep in his own team’s territory that found
Guido Riffeser (Fr., Bolzano, Italy) with space to work. Riffeser went one-on-one with the goalkeeper from the left side of the goal and scored. It was the freshman’s first goal of the year.
The match started off in the Sharks’ favor, with NSU outshooting the road team, 10-2. Despite the lopsided shot output, the Sharks struggled with accuracy and only registered two shots-on-goal in the first half.
The defensive struggle ended in the second half when Eckerd scored on their first penalty kick in the 55th minute. The Tritons held the lead for the next 11 minutes before Riffeser scored the equalizer. Six minutes later, the Sharks committed another foul in the box and Eckerd retook the lead on the penalty shot. Eckerd’s Matt Duffy scored on both plays.
The Sharks pushed forward in attempt to tie the match once again before Eckerd secured the victory in the 80th minute. A scramble in front of the goal allowed Mark Lee to score his fourth goal of the season from point-blank range. The Sharks’ last opportunity to cut into the lead came with two minutes remaining on a free kick from one yard outside of the penalty box. Eckerd’s Andrew Hoffer made a diving save on
Riccardo Bini’s (Fr., Varese, Italy) shot.
The Sharks will look to rebound at the NSU Soccer Complex on Saturday against Barry at 5 p.m.
