Volleyball Hits Road for Back-to-Back Weekend Matches

Sharks to face Florida Southern Friday and Saint Leo Saturday.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern volleyball team (4-15, 1-5 SSC) will hit the road this weekend for a pair of Sunshine State Conference matches. The Sharks will take on the Florida Southern Mocs (13-7, 4-3 SSC) Friday at 7 p.m. and the Saint Leo Lions (7-8, 1-6 SSC) Saturday at 4 p.m.

The volleyball team enters the weekend with a 1-3 record over their last four matches. However, there are signs that the season could be shifting towards the Sharks’ favor. NSU dismantled a strong Florida Tech team, 3-0, before dropping a marathon match against Barry on the road, 3-2. The Sharks’ other two losses were to Tampa and Eckerd, both 3-0, the top-two teams in the SSC.

The Sharks’ face a different set of opponents this weekend in the Mocs and Lions. The Mocs are 4-3 in conference play and need a win over NSU just to stay above .500 and remain third in the SSC. The Mocs are also coming off losses in their last two conference matches.

The Lions have had their struggles this season, as they sit at the bottom of the SSC standings with a 1-6 record in conference play. Saint Leo lost their first six conference matches before upsetting Florida Southern at home Tuesday night, 3-2.

The Sharks have had minimal success in the past against Florida Southern, holding 4-17 record against the Mocs all-time. The Sharks will be looking to snap a four-match losing streak against Florida Southern in a facility in which they have not won since 2009. Against Saint Leo, the Sharks will be looking to move the all-time record to an even 19-19 with a win. The Sharks are currently on six-match skid against Saint Leo, with the last win for NSU coming in the NCAA tournament in 2008.

Although the Sharks will face tough competition away from the friendly confines of the NSU Arena, two wins would serve as a momentum shit for the Sharks. Five of the SSC’s nine teams are currently at .500 or lower, and a 3-5 record would shoot NSU up the standings in the parody-filled SSC.
