FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern women’s soccer team (4-5-2, 3-3-2 SSC) finished in a 2-2 draw against rival Barry (3-6-1, 1-4-1 SSC) Saturday, Oct. 13, at the NSU Soccer Complex.
The Sharks spotted Barry a two-goal lead at halftime but were able to come back and score two goals in the second half to come away with a tie and a point in the standings.
The first goal of the match came in the 17th minute, when Barry’s Sara Karna ripped a shot off of the far post where Sarah Wolfer was waiting alone and calmly put the ball in the back of the net, giving the Buccaneers an early 1-0 lead.
In the 36th minute, Barry struck again when Kayla Hodge took a shot that was saved but not held by goalkeeper
Amanda Kopale (Fr., Cape Coral, Fla.), giving Hodge a second opportunity at a wide open net and took advantage. This goal gave Barry a commanding 2-0 lead going into halftime.
The Sharks turned it around in the second half when, in the 67th minute,
Stephanie Moench (Fr., Austin, Texas) played a ball into the box from a corner kick, where an unmarked
Alexandra Siciliano (Jr., New Hyde Park, N.Y.) headed the ball into the back of the net.
With only 10 minutes left in the match,
Andi Burchfield (So., Greenville, S.C.) played a great corner kick into the box.
Dilja Olafsdottir (Jr., Reykjavik, Iceland) was able to put a strong head onto the ball and beat the goalkeeper far post.
The best opportunity of the overtime periods came in the 117th minute, when
Sierra Lelii (So., Seminole, Fla.) was played a through ball and was one-on-one with goalkeeper Amber Rogers, who came up with the biggest save of the match.
The Sharks edged out their opponents on shots, 20-19, on the evening. Kopale recorded a career-high 10 saves.
The Sharks will hit the road when they play Tampa, Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 6 p.m.
