Volleyball Drops One on the Road to Florida Tech

Sharks fell in three straight sets to the Panthers.

MELBOURNE, Fla.
- The Nova Southeastern women’s volleyball team (4-21, 1-8 SSC) fell short to the Florida Tech Panthers (15-7, 5-5 SSC) Saturday afternoon in Melbourne, Fla. The Panthers took three straight sets from the Sharks by the scores of 25-23, 25-22, and 25-23.

The Sharks had a rough night offensively but leading the way was Sydney Cook (Fr., Miami, Fla.) and Tory Njardvik (Fr., Livingston, Mont.), who combining for 21 kills, 11 and 10, respectively. Kristina Eric (Jr., Sokolac, Bosnia) added 32 helpers to the team's offense and five digs defensively. Paige Boivin (Sr., Plainfield Ill.) led the Sharks on defense with 18 digs.

In the first set the Sharks had a slow start on the road, allowing Florida Tech to take an early lead scoring the first five of six points. NSU fought to even the slate and take control of the set but were only able to come within one of the Panthers. The Sharks continued to push and eventually evened the score late in the match, 22-22, in hopes of turning the tables and taking their first lead of the set.  The Sharks and Panthers swopped points before the Panthers capitalized on their opportunities taking the first set from NSU, 25-23.

In the second set the Sharks battled back and forth with the panthers, trading points. The Sharks took their first lead of the match after a seven all tie and continued their push to take a four point lead, 12-8. The Panthers didn’t stop without a fight, posting six points, taking the lead, 14-12 midway through the set.  The Sharks even the score a couple times late in the set but were unable to regain the lead, falling, 22-25, in the second.

The third set started out much like the first with the Panthers taking an early four point lead before the Sharks registered their first point. The Sharks gained a bit of momentum pulling within one of the Panthers midway through but Florida Tech stayed very consistent offensively. The Sharks poured it on late, coming back from a deep hole, edging themselves within one, 23-24, but were unable to turn the momentum and force a fourth set. The Sharks dropped the third, 23-25, and the match to the Panthers

The Sharks are back in action next week, Oct. 31 on the road against Lynn University at 7 p.m.
