FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The Nova Southeastern women’s volleyball team (4-15, 1-5 SSC) dropped three-straight matches to the No. 5 Tampa Spartans (13-2, 6-0 SSC) on Saturday at the NSU Arena at the Don Taft University Center.
The Sharks had a rough night offensively, but leading the way was
Dana Holger (Fr., Lino Lakes, Minn.) and
Destiny Bannister (So., Homestead, Fla.), who combining for 17 kills, 9 and 8, respectively.
Kelly McMahon (Sr., Madison, Wis.) in her second start as a setter, added 23 helpers to the team's offense and nine digs defensively.
Paige Boivin (Sr., Plainfield Ill.) led the Sharks on defense with 13 digs.
In the first set, the Sharks traded points with the Spartans to a 6-6 tie until allowing the Spartans to gain too much momentum midway through the set. The Sharks battled back, coming within three points, 13-10, but the Spartans responded by scoring 12 of the remaining 15 points to take the first set 25-13 and an early match lead.
The second set became a series of runs for both teams. The Sharks came out swinging, scoring six of the first seven points to take an early lead. The Spartans responded quickly, tilting the table with a 10-point run to take the lead, 11-7. The Sharks continued to battle putting together a couple streaks of their own but were unable to overcome the Spartans explosive offense. NSU was topped 25-17 and trailed by two in the match.
The Sharks came out for the third with high expectations but the Spartans momentum was too much to handle. NSU had trouble controlling Tampa’s momentum swings, allowing them to create a gap as much as 10 points midway through. The Sharks put forth a solid effort at the end but wasn’t enough to press a fourth set. NSU fell 25-17 in the third resulting in their second loss of the weekend.
The Sharks will travel to Lakeland, Fla. Friday, Oct. 12 to take on Sunshine State Conference opponent Florida Southern (12-6, SSC 4-2).
