FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern softball team (10-8) is set to participate in its third tournament of the season this weekend, travelling to Columbus, Ga. to compete in the Columbus State Invitational. The Sharks will play a total of six games against four different opponents from Friday through Monday at Cougar Field.
The Sharks begin play Friday, Feb. 24 at 12 p.m. against No. 12 Armstrong Atlantic State and will continue that day at 2 p.m. against host Columbus State. On the second day of the tournament, NSU will be on the field for a pair of games beginning at 11 a.m. against Lincoln Memorial and then again at 1 p.m. to take on Young Harris.
Last time out, the Sharks earned two victories during a doubleheader at St. Thomas. NSU took game one 4-2, and then won in five innings, 9-0, in game two.
Laura Saladrigas (Jr., Hollywood, Fla.) pitched five scoreless innings in the second game against the Bobcats, giving up only three hits to, improving to 4-2 this season.
The Sharks have won five of their last seven games dating back to last Thursday’s sweep of Northwood at the AD Griffin Sports Complex. In those seven games,
Lorena Spaulding (Fr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) is 12-for-25 at the plate and has scored 10 runs.
No. 12 Armstrong Atlantic State
The Pirates (11-2) defeated the Sharks in their first meeting this season Feb. 10 at the Eckerd Tournament, 4-1. AASU scored three times in the bottom of the second inning on a RBI single by junior Shelby Duff. Jaimee Vega (Jr., Loxahatchee, Fla.) delivered an RBI single in the seventh to account for the Sharks' lone run of the game.
Duff is leading the Pirates with 14 runs scored this season and is batting .422. The junior has seven RBI, three doubles and has driven one pitch out of the park.
Columbus State
The Cougars (4-5) will play a doubleheader Wednesday at Albany State, Ga. before hosting this weekend’s tournament. Columbus State is coming off a series against Carson-Newman last Saturday, splitting a pair of games with the Eagles.
Casey Goorge, batting .346, leads the Cougars with eight runs scored and seven RBI. She also has three homeruns this season in nine games.
Lincoln Memorial
The Railsplitters, out of Harrogate, Tenn., will play at home Wednesday against Cumberland. LMU dropped a two-game set against Virginia Intermont College Monday afternoon at Dorothy Neely Field by scores of 2-0 and 7-6. With the two losses, LMU falls to 5-5 on the season.
This will be the first away game for the Railsplitters during the 2012 campaign. Senior Bridget Eicher leads the team with seven RBI, and has the sole triple for the team. Brianna Mulkey is 6-6 on stolen base attempts and has four runs scored this season.
Young Harris
The Mountain Lions (4-4) will head into the tournament coming off a doubleheader defeat at the hands of Tusculum. The Pioneers won both games against the Mountain Lions by one run.
On the mound, Katie-Jo Gentry has 25 strikeouts in 24 innings this season. Freshman Paige Sexton leads the team with nine hits and is batting .391.
The Sharks will rest for a day after the tournament, before returning to the field to play a doubleheader against Columbus State Monday, Feb. 27. First pitch Monday is slated for 11 a.m.
