BOX SCORE
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern baseball team (5-1) picked up a 12-7 win in the first of four games against West Alabama (6-5) Friday night at the NSU Baseball Complex.
Areo Regoli (Sr., Homestead, Fla.) had another huge outing as he went 2-for-5 with two home runs and four RBI.
Javi Sujo (Sr., Miami, Fla.) had his breakout game, going 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI. In his third appearance,
Mike Gonzalez (Jr., Miami, Fla.) (3-0) recorded his first win as a Shark, pitching four innings in relief. Gonzalez struck out three batters in an 86-pitch outing and was followed by
Mauricio Rodriguez (Sr., Miami, Fla.), who limited the Tigers to one hit over the final 1.2 innings pitched.
The Tigers grabbed the lead early, as they scored one run in the opening frame. The Sharks exploded in the next inning and scored their first four runs. Sujo led off the side and had his best at bat as a Shark, drilling a solo bomb over left field. It was his first home run in a Sharks uniform. NSU carried its momentum through the rest of the inning as the next five batters reached base safely and drove in two runs.
Ray Navarro (Sr., Miami, Fla.) and
Nikko Echevarria (Sr., Abqaib, Saudi Arabia) each picked up an RBI in the frame.
The Tigers made it a one-run game with two more runs scored in the third inning. In the fourth, Regoli blew the lead open with a three run blast over the right field fence. Navarro and
Carlos Asuaje (So., Weston, Fla.) got the inning started with singles up the middle. After
Nikko Echevarria (Sr., Abqaib, Saudi Arabia) moved both runners into scoring position, Regoli sent the ball out of the park on the first pitch he saw.
Regoli would put another run on the board with possibly his longest home run of the season in the sixth. On a 3-0 count, Regoli blast the ball over the scoreboard for a solo home run. The home run marked the second straight game in which Regoli has recorded multiple homers.
Sujo scored again in the seventh inning as he picked up another leadoff hit, a single through the right side. Sujo would go on to steal second and third base on his first two steal attempts of the season.
Blake Boyd (Jr., Jupiter, Fla.) laid down the sacrifice bunt to bring in the Sharks’ ninth run of the game.
The Tigers brought their deficit to within two runs but the Sharks answered back with a big eighth inning. The Sharks drove in their final three runs of the game as
Alex Marrero (Jr., Miami, Fla.), Sujo, and Navarro all drove in runs.
The Sharks will continue their four-game series against the Tigers Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
