FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University baseball team (6-2) split a doubleheader Saturday against the West Alabama Tigers (7-6), taking the first game by a score of 6-4 but dropping the second, 3-1.
GAME ONE
Zachary Westcott (So., Weston, Fla.) lead the Sharks on the mound, pitching six complete innings, facing 27 at the plate, giving up six hits and striking out three batters for his second win of the season.
Carlos Asuaje (So., Weston, Fla.) lead the Sharks offensively, going 2-for-4 with a run scored.
The Sharks got things going early in the first with a RBI single to left field by
Areo Regoli (Sr., Homestead, Fla.) to score Asuaje from second for the first run of the inning. The Sharks scored two additional runs off a sacrifice fly to right field from
Alex Marrero (Jr., Miami, Fla,), scoring
Chris Morales (Jr., Miami, Fla.), and a lined single by
Eric Acevedo (Jr., Miami, Fla.) to bring home Regoli from third, giving NSU a quick lead, 3-1.
West Alabama struck back, adding two runs off a two RBI double by Micah Reaves in the top of the fourth to pull within one of the Sharks.
The Tigers attacked once again in the top of the sixth, chalking up two more runs off a RBI double and single to pull ahead of the Sharks, 4-3.
NSU bounced back quickly with heads-up base running, as they took advantage of defensive miscues by the Tigers.
Javi Sujo (Sr., Miami, Fla.) scored first on a throwing error by the Tigers’ pitcher after singling to center field and advancing to third. A ground out RBI double by
Ray Navarro (Sr., Miami, Fla.) lead Marrero home for the Sharks’ second score and
Brett Clements (Jr., Riverview, Fla.), with a RBI single to right field, drove home the Sharks’ final run of the inning to regain the lead, 6-4.
The Sharks held strong defensively throughout the remaining three innings to retain their two-run lead and close out West Alabama for their sixth win of the season.
GAME TWO
The Sharks started strong with heads-up pitching by
Mitchell Buerosse (Jr., Lighthouse Point, Fla.), who faced 14 batters, giving up only two hits and knocking down four to strikeouts. This was Buerosee’s debut appearance at NSU. Asuaje, led the Sharks at the plate, going 1-for-2 with a run scored.
It was a defensive battle throughout the first three and a half innings, until a RBI double by Regoli advanced teammate Asuaje around the turn and across the plate to break the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth. This was the Sharks’ first and only run scored in the contest.
West Alabama chopped away at the Sharks’ late inning pitchers, scoring three consecutive runs in three innings to take the lead, 3-1, heading into the bottom of the seventh.
The Sharks refused to go down without a fight in their last at bat. Clements struck first with a two-bagger to left center to put himself in position as the tying run with two outs. After two consecutive walks, the bases became loaded, giving the Sharks the upper hand with the winning run on first. Unfortunately, the game ended on a strike out, as the Sharks stranded three runners on.
The Sharks are back on the diamond Tuesday, Feb., 28 against cross town rival Barry University in a non-conference tilt at the NSU Baseball Complex, first pitch is scheduled to for 6 p.m.
