FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern baseball team (7-2) will look to avenge its 1-0 loss to the Barry Buccaneers (4-7) this Tuesday at the NSU Baseball Complex at 6 p.m.
The Sharks, who enter the week ranked 29th in the nation, will look to pounce on a team that has not lived up to its lofty expectations. Barry entered the year ranked 27th in the nation, but have earned seven losses in their first 11 games. Since defeating NSU in Fort Lauderdale on Feb. 9, the Bucs have lost six of their last seven games. However, their losses have come against top opposition such as then-ranked No. 1 West Florida and Delta State.
On the other hand, the Sharks will enter the matchup with momentum. NSU went 3-1 this past weekend in a four-game series against West Florida. The Sharks won the opening game Friday night, 12-7, before splitting a Saturday doubleheader. The Sharks closed out the series with a 9-3 win Sunday afternoon.
Seniors
Javi Sujo (Miami, Fla.) and
Areo Regoli (Homestead, Fla.) both made great cases for Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week with big weekends. Sujo, who entered the weekend with a .091 batting average, had a breakout series by hitting .500 with two home runs, five runs scored and six RBI. Regoli hit .400 with three home runs, five runs scored and eight RBI. Five of Regoli’s six hits were for extra bases.
The Sharks and the Bucs were the two top teams in the SSC last season, with the Bucs taking the conference title by three games. The two teams faced each other seven times last season, more than any other opponent for either team. The Bucs took the edge in the series, 4-3, but it did not come easy.
During the regular season, the Sharks took a 3-2 edge in the season series with three of the five games coming down to two runs or less. Barry won two of the three SSC games, one of which went to 13 innings, while the Sharks won two non-conference games on the road.
The Bucs took the season edge in the NCAA South Regional when they handed the Sharks’ two losses. Barry defeated the Sharks, 6-0, in the first game of the postseason and went on to eliminate the Sharks with a 5-4 victory. In the series defining game, the Sharks had a runner on third base in the bottom of the ninth inning, but could not send him home. Barry would go on to fall to the eventual NCAA National Champions West Florida.
Tuesday’s game will be the Sharks’ final nonconference game against the Bucs this season. They will travel to Barry to play a conference series against the Bucs from March 30-31.
