BOX SCORE
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University baseball team (1-0) opened up its spring season with a shut out victory over the Rams of Albany State (0-1) Friday evening at the NSU Baseball Complex, outscoring them, 12-0.
The evening kicked off with a pre-game ceremony to honor two Shark Alumni, J.D. Martinez and Mike Fiers, for their accomplishments of making the big leagues this season with the Houston Astros and Milwaukee Brewers, respectfully. The two were honored with framed action photos and an outfield fence banner to commemorate their achievements, which will hang in the outfield of the NSU Baseball Complex.
Leading the Sharks offensively was
Areo Regoli (Sr., Homestead, Fla.), who went 2-for-3 at bat with two runs scored and one RBI. Starting on the mound and clinching his first win of the season was
Zachary Westcott (So. Weston, Fla.), who faced 21 batters in five innings while giving up three hits and striking out five.
The Sharks attacked early in the bottom of the first inning. With two on, Regoli singled through the left side to score
Carlos Asuaje (So., Weston, Fla.) from second, also advancing
Javi Sujo (Sr., Miami, Fla.) to second. The Rams turned two to end the inning off a grounder to short by
Chris Morales (Jr., Miami, Fla.).
Defense prevailed in the top of the second, holding the rams scoreless with two runners left on the corners. NSU got started off in the bottom of the second with a single to the left side by
Anthony Angulo (Sr., Homestead, Fla.). After
Ray Navarro (Sr., Miami, Fla.) reached first on balls it was loose pitching by the Rams that led to Angulo rounding the bases to score the lone run for the Sharks in the second.
The Sharks once again held defensively and Regoli lined his second single to left field. Angulo advanced Regoli to third with his second single through the right side. With runners on the corners and only one out,
Scott Woodrey (Sr., Lighthouse Point, Fla.) hit a sacrafice fly RBI to center field, scoring Regoli and ending the Sharks’ attack for the inning.
After a scoreless fourth, the Sharks powered up with their highest scoring inning in the bottom of the fifth, bringing around four runs. Morales got the boys going with a single to right field. After two walked batters and more loose pitching by the Rams, Morales made his way home to score the first run with the bases remaining loading.
Nikko Echevarria (Sr., Abqaib, Saudi Arabia) ripped a RBI single through the infield to bring home
Blake Boyd (Jr., Jupiter, Fla.) from third. Two throwing errors by the Rams brought home two more Shark runners to close out the inning with 4 runs.
In the sixth the Sharks landed two runners on base by way of balls. Morales knocked two-bag stand-up RBI double to bring around Sujo for their first run of the inning. After a series of walked batters, NSU was able to advance to more runners home.
With a scoreless inning in the seventh, NSU put two more on the board in the eighth by way of fielding errors by the Rams.
Another Shark notable was Angulo, who went 2-for-2 with two runs scored. The Sharks only needed seven hits on the night to score 12 runs in the shutout.
The Sharks are back in action Saturday, Feb. 4, when they clash with the Rams once again in a doubleheader starting at noon at the NSU Baseball Complex.
