FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern softball team (15-11) is set to open up Sunshine State Conference competition this weekend, hosting Florida Tech (10-9) in a three-game series that begins Friday at 7 p.m. at the AD Griffin Sports Complex.
NSU has been a winner in seven of its 10 most recent contests, with doubleheader sweeps of St. Thomas and Columbus State. The Sharks most recently split a pair of games with visiting Mercyhurst at home Wednesday evening, winning the first game 2-0, but falling in game two, 10-5.
At home this season, the Sharks have played to a 6-3 record, while the Panthers are only 1-5 as the visiting team in 2012.
Freshman
Lorena Spaulding (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) paces the Sharks’ offense, hitting at a .453 clip with a team-high 34 hits. Spaulding is also tied with
Katie Kelton (Sr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) with seven stolen bases this season. Kelton is also credited with five of NSU’s 19 doubles through the first 26 games in 2012.
FIT enters this weekend’s series riding a six-game win streak, including the last four at home. The Panthers took a pair of doubleheaders from Northwood and Dominican, three of which FIT won by way of mercy rule.
Two Panthers are averaging over .400 at the dish, as Kelsey Donahue and Kara Dickinson are batting .429 and .412, respectively. A duo of FIT student-athletes have split time in the circle. Brianna Barth has pitched to a 6-4 record with a 1.60 ERA, while Taylor Smith holds an even 4-4 mark and 1.78 ERA.
Last season, the Panthers took a trio of games from the Sharks in Melbourne, Fla. at the end of March 2011.
