Sharks score 17 runs in the first three innings.

BOX SCORE

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –
The Nova Southeastern baseball team (12-4) scored 17 runs in the first three innings and went on to defeat the Philadelphia Rams (4-9), 20-3, Tuesday night at the NSU Baseball Complex.

Alex Marrero (Jr., Miami, Fla.) led the charge offensively as he went 2-for-3 with five RBI and four runs scored. Five of his RBI came on a grand slam in the second inning. It was his third home run of the year. Daniel Petitbon (Jr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) went 1-for-2 with three RBI and two runs scored. All of his RBI came in the opening frame on a home run over left centerfield, initially putting the Sharks up by four runs. It was a busy night as every starter was subbed out and 18 Sharks recorded plate appearances.

Cody Stiles (Jr., Coral Springs, Fla.) had the most impressive start of his NSU career, pitching five no-hit innings. He struck out a career-high nine batters over his five innings pitched and only allowed one base runner on a walk. When he wasn’t striking out batters, he was keeping the ball out of the air. He recorded five groundouts without allowing a flyball. Tyler Redding (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) replaced Stiles in the sixth inning before Shane Hill (Jr., Davie, Fla.) and Drew Packard (So., Knoxville, Tenn.) came in and pitched no-hit innings of their own.

Chris Morales (Jr., Miami, Fla.) went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Freshman Chris Van Brandt (Sarasota, Fla.) came in for the Miami-Dade transfer and went 2-for-3 at the plate. Scott Woodrey (Sr., Lighthouse Point, Fla.), who is hitting .429 on the season, did not record an at bat but walked three times and scored every time he reached base.

Areo Regoli (Sr., Homestead, Fla.) had an efficient outing, hitting a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs and a RBI. He was replaced by centerfielder Angel Navarro (Fr., Miami Lakes, Fla.), who earned his first career hit. Nikko Echevarria (Sr., Abqaib, Saudi Arabia) went 2-for-3 in the contest with two runs and a RBI.

Javi Sujo (Sr., Miami, Fla.) started at third base, away from his normal position, and went 1-for-2 with two runs and two RBI. Like his fellow freshman Angel Navarro, Michael Melendez (Miramar, Fla.) pinch hit and recorded the first hit of his career. Brett Clements (Jr., Riverview, Fla.) and Ryan Woodrey (Fr., Lighthouse Point, Fla.) split time at catcher and both went 1-for-2. Clements drove in one run on a sacrifice fly while Woodrey recorded his first hit and drove in two runs.

Ray Navarro (Sr., Miami, Fla.) went 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI while leadoff hitter Carlos Asuaje (So., Weston, Fla.) went 1-for-4 with a run and a RBI. In the end the Sharks collected 20 hits and drew 14 walks. The Rams needed 232 pitches over eight innings to retire the Sharks.

The Sharks will be back in action Wednesday night when NSU hosts St. Michael’s at the NSU Baseball Complex at 6 p.m.
