Barry Takes Low Scoring Affair Over NSU Softball, 1-0, on Strikeout Cancer Night

DeMuth is now 13 strikeouts away from the single-season record.

BOX SCORE

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.
The Nova Southeastern softball team (20-16, 5-5 SSC) and Barry (26-5, 9-1 SSC) went head-to-head in a pitcher’s dual Friday night at the AD Griffin Sports Complex with the Buccaneers coming out on top, 1-0, on “Strikeout Cancer” night. Sara DeMuth (Sr., Plant City, Fla.) recorded 10 strikeouts for the Sharks, topping the 200 plateau. She now has 204 this season.

Prior to the game, the Sharks recognized two survivors of cancer close to the Sharks’ softball program as a part of the NFCA’s “Strikeout Cancer” event. Dr. C.A. Tolchinsky, manager of student-athlete academic services, and Eve Kelton, the mother of centerfielder Katie Kelton, both continuing to fight cancer, each threw out an honorary first pitch prior to the game. Pictures of the event can be seen below.

On the field, Barry was the first to get on the scoreboard, tallying a run in the first half inning. After three singles in succession to start play, Jessica Tabor hit a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Sarah Broeseker.

Despite having zero base runners score over the course of the next couple of innings, the top of the fourth inning featured some favorable action for NSU as DeMuth reached the 200-strikeout milestone this year, sitting down a pair of Barry batters.

NSU’s had one last chance to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, placing a runner on second with no outs, but Barry’s starting pitcher, Brianna Smith, was able to get the next two batters to pop up ending the game.

The Sharks and Bucs will face each other again Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.
