FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern softball team (20-18, 5-7 SSC) will host the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish (21-14) Tuesday evening for a midweek, out-of-conference matchup. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m. at the AD Griffin Sports Complex.
The Sharks will be looking to bounce back after dropping three games to No. 6 Barry over weekend. The Bucs pitching staff was able to hold NSU to just 12 hits the entire series. The Sharks will need to improve at the plate if they want to knock off a Sailfish squad that is allowing on average six hits per contest.
The top of the Sharks’ batting order has been steadily productive this season, as they hold three of the four best batting averages this season.
Lorena Spaulding (Fr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) leads the way with a .385 average, while also holding a .409 on-base percentage.
Katie Kelton (Sr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) leads NSU in on-base percentage at .430, and is second on the team with a .358 average at the dish.
Melanie Spicola (Fr., Umatilla, Fla.), who has been hitting in the nine hole recently, has also done a good job reaching base. Her OBP sits at .404, while going .322 at the plate, giving the Sharks four straight batters that are hitting over .320 and reaching base at a .385 clip or better.
The Sailfish, an independent NCAA Division-II competitor, enters Tuesday’s contest with a 21-14 mark after splitting a doubleheader against Saint Leo Saturday. The Sailfish won game one, 2-1, but dropped the second, 8-7.
Four PBA batters are hitting over .350 this season. Camille Benito’s batting average sits at a team-high .391, edging out Lisa Santos who is averaging .383. Hits leader (38) Kara Anderson sits in third, batting .364, while Mira Stokes holds a .351 average. Mary Pippin has seen the most time on the mound for PBA, pitching to a 12-7 record and a 1.99 ERA.
