FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern softball team (22-18, 5-7 SSC) will return to Sunshine State Conference play this weekend, heading out on the road to take on Saint Leo (17-22, 2-7 SSC). The three-game series will begin Friday night at 7 p.m. at the University Softball Stadium and continue with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday.
The Sharks are coming off a pair of one-run victories over Palm Beach Atlantic Tuesday night at the AD Griffin Sports Complex. NSU needed 10 innings to win the first game, but a
Laura Saladrigas (Jr., Hollywood, Fla.) walk-off RBI in the bottom of the 10th sealed the win for the Sharks, 2-1. Game two ended with an identical score in seven innings with
Chelsea Emery (Jr., Eustis, Fla.) recording both RBI in the game.
It was a historic night in the circle for
Sara DeMuth (Sr., Plant City, Fla.), as she broke the NSU single-season strikeout record. DeMuth, who threw 13 strikeouts in each game against the Sailfish, has 238 strikeouts this season (second in the nation), breaking the previous record of 217 set by Lexi Sarradet in 2009.
Saint Leo enters this weekend’s series having won only one game of its last nine. The Lions have run into some stiff competition, losing a three-game series to No. 4 Barry and a doubleheader to Valdosta State, a team that become the nation’s No. 1 ranked squad in this week’s NFCA Coach’s poll.
Fans will have an opportunity to watch two of the SSC’s best hitters this weekend, as Alex Garris from Saint Leo and
Lorena Spaulding (Fr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) are currently second and third in the conference in hits, respectively. Garris has registered 45 hits, one greater than Spaulding. The Shark’s hitter though, edges Saint Leo’s in batting average, as Spaulding sits third in the SSC with a .385 average, while Garris is sixth at .376.
The Sharks will have an opportunity to move back into fourth place in the conference standings this weekend. NSU trails Florida Southern by two games and with a sweep the Sharks can jump ahead of the Mocs in the standings, as FSC is slated to play PBA in an out-of-conference doubleheader Saturday. The Sharks will also try and keep Florida Tech, who is one game back in sixth and take on Lynn this weekend, at bay.
