BOX SCORE

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –
The Nova Southeastern baseball team (10-3) lost its final game before Sunshine State Conference play begins, falling to the undefeated Southern New Hampshire Penmen (10-0) Tuesday at the NSU Baseball Complex, 14-7.

The Sharks got in an early hole when the Penmen posted four runs in the first inning. The visiting side led off the game with three straight hits and drove home two runs on a double down the left field line. The Sharks would answer with one run in the first inning, as Carlos Asuaje (So., Weston, Fla.) led off with a double to right field and scored on a sacrifice fly from Areo Regoli (Sr., Homestead, Fla.).

The Sharks erased their deficit and took a two-run lead after scoring five runs in the third inning. The side started with NSU loading the bases without recording a hit. Javi Sujo (Sr., Miami, Fla.) batted in a run off a walk and a wild pitch plated Regoli. Alex Marrero (Jr., Miami, Fla.) cleared the bases with a three-run homer to left field. The home run brought Marrero’s season totals to two home runs and 13 RBI, which ranks second on the team.

After Marrero’s home run, SNH would erase the Sharks’ offense by bringing in Alex Powers. Powers would strike out eight batters over three innings pitched and only allow one hit, a leadoff double from Daniel Petitbon (Jr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) in the fifth inning. He would go on to strike out the rest of the side.

The Penmen flipped the script in the sixth inning by scoring seven runs. The Sharks fell victim to their own fielding errors in the frame, as only one of seven runs were earned. The Sharks committed two costly errors in the inning and had five runs come across the plate after the mistakes. Southern New Hampshire would score once again in the seventh inning.

The Sharks would post another run on a solo blast from Kevin Reynolds (So., Fort Myers, Fla.). With one out on the board, Reynolds pinch hit for Ray Navarro (Sr., Miami, Fla.) and sent the ball over the wall in right centerfield. It was the first home run of his career and first pinch-hit homer for NSU this year. The visiting squad answered back with two more runs in the final inning.

NSU ended the game on a rally, loading up the bases with no outs in the ninth inning. Sujo earned his second RBI of the night on a sacrifice fly to centerfield. With runners on the corners, the game ended on a 643 double play.

In the end, the Sharks committed four errors to SNH’s two and recorded eight hits to the Penmen’s 19.

The Sharks will begin SSC play this Friday against Florida Tech in Melbourne, Fla. at 6 p.m. It will be the first time the Sharks play under the lights at Andy Seminick-Les Hall Field.
