FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern softball team (17-12, 2-1 SSC) is set to make its first conference road trip of the season, heading to No. 18 Rollins (17-4, 0-0 SSC) for a three-game set beginning Friday, March 9 at 7 p.m. A doubleheader will follow the next day with first pitch slated for 1 p.m. at the Rollins Softball Stadium at Lake Island Park.
The Sharks are coming off a successful week of play, going 5-2 overall and 2-1 during the opening weekend of SSC competition. NSU hosted Florida Tech over the weekend, securing a pair of victories over the Panthers. As a team, the Sharks batted .313 over that span, including a .500 (11-of-22) performance by
Lorena Spaulding (Fr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.).
Gina Bondarenko (So., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) tallied seven RBI on seven hits, while
Laura Saladrigas (Jr., Hollywood, Fla.) recorded five RBI on nine hits.
Pitcher
Sara DeMuth (Sr., Plant City, Fla.) picked up SSC Pitcher of the Week honors with a 4-1 record, three shutouts and a save. DeMuth, who rang up 38 batters in six appearances last week, has a 2.42 ERA this season and an 11-8 record.
The series against NSU will represent the first SSC games for the 19th-ranked Tars this season. Rollins is currently 17-4 and 7-1 on its home field during the 2012 campaign. Winners in 11 of their last 12 contests, the Tars most recently knocked off Cedarville and Southern New Hampshire Monday at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla.
Rollins is led offensively by the SSC Player of the Week, outfielder Monica Meadows. The senior led the No. 19 Tars to a 5-1 weekly mark, including a win over No. 1 Alabama-Huntsville. Meadows batted .450 with eight runs and six RBI. She hit safely in five games and tallied multiple hits in three contests. Posting a 1.050 slugging percentage, Meadows notched two doubles, two triples, and two home runs, hitting at least one extra-base shot in five of six games.
In the circle, Hope Bitzer and and Amye McIntyre have picked up a combined 13 wins, while helping the Tars hold opposing hitters to a .188 batting average.
NSU is looking for its first victory over the Tars since the 2009 season when the Sharks won twice over Rollins. Last season’s series is one the Sharks would rather forget, as the Tars swept all three games by way of shutout, while Bitzer and Kristen Frame each registered no-hitters for Rollins.
