BOX SCORE
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern softball team (32-21, 12-9 SSC) held No. 5 Tampa (35-5, 20-2 SSC) to just four hits Friday night, but the Spartans were able to come away with a 1-0 victory over the Sharks at the AD Griffin Sports Complex.
The Spartans first scoring opportunity came in the second inning, as they loaded the bases with one out. The Sharks would get out of the jam though, as
Sara DeMuth (Sr., Plant City, Fla.) struck out Brie Walton and then got Susan Jallo to hit a slow grounder to third where
Melanie Spicola (Fr., Umatilla, Fla.) could tag the base for the force out.
The Sharks would not be as fortunate in the third inning. Again, Tampa loaded the bases with one out, bringing Meagan Burke to the plate. Burke earned a walk on a full count to force home Kayleen Boatwright and put the Spartans ahead, 1-0.
After the third, neither team would get a base runner past second base until the seventh, when Tampa loaded the bases once again with one out. NSU was able to escape the inning though with no runners scoring.
Holly Roberson (So., Dunnellon, Fla.) made a sprinting catch on a liner to right field and then through a laser into DeMuth to hold the runner at third to get the second out, with DeMuth then getting Katlyn Raatz to ground out to give the Sharks three outs to tie the game.
The Spartans’ starting pitcher, Deanna Henriott would get the first three Shark batters she faced out, including recording her eighth strikeout of the game for the final out.
DeMuth matched Henriott with eight strikeouts, but gave up a season-high six walks.
Lorena Spaulding (Fr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.),
Raven Sepulveda (Fr., Tampa, Fla.) and
Jaimee Vega (Jr., Loxahatchee, Fla.) were the lone Sharks to register hits in the box score Friday for NSU.
The Sharks and Spartans will be back on the field tomorrow for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at the AD Griffin Sports Complex. NSU will honor its two seniors, DeMuth and
Katie Kelton (Sr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.), prior to the first game.
