FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern baseball team (32-13, 12-10 SSC) split a doubleheader on senior day against the Rollins Tars (28-21, 9-14 SSC) Friday at the NSU Baseball Complex.

GAME ONE
The Sharks finished a game that was started Thursday, defeating the Tars, 6-3, in the series-opening game Friday.

Areo Regoli (Sr., Homestead, Fla.) went 2-for-4 with two RBI and his 16th home run. He is now one of four players in program history to hit at least 16 home runs in a season. Daniel Petitbon (Sr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) went 1-for-4 with a run scored and his first-career triple.

After Zachary Westcott (So., Weston, Fla.) pitched the first 2.1 innings on Thursday, Vinnie Contaldi (Jr., Jupiter, Fla.) earned the victory with a stellar outing. Contaldi held the Tars to one run on five hits over 6.2 innings pitched. He drew nine groundouts in the contest, earning his sixth win of the year.

Regoli got the Sharks on the board first on Thursday, hitting home run No. 16 to left field in the first inning. One a 3-1 count with two outs on the board, Regoli drilled a solo shot over left field. The Tars answered back with a home run of their own in the second, scoring two runs.

After going scoreless in the second and third inning, the Sharks scored one run in every inning for the remainder of the game. Petitbon led off the fourth inning with his first triple and was driven home on a sacrifice fly from Alex Marrero (Jr., Miami, Fla.). The Sharks showed their patience at the plate in the fifth, driving in a run on four walks over six batters.

Nikko Echevarria (Sr., Abqaib, Saudi Arabia) recorded a RBI in the sixth frame, plating Brett Clements (Jr., Riverview, Fla.) on a single up the middle. In the seventh, Marrero took advantage of Tar mistakes, reaching base on a fielding error before scoring on a throwing error. Regoli drove in the Sharks’ final run of the game, scoring Asuaje on an infield single. The Tars had a rally going in the ninth, but only scored one run.

GAME TWO
The Sharks were upset in game two, giving up an extra-inning loss to the Tars, 8-5.

Marrero and Echevarria led the offense as they both went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Ray Navarro (Sr., Miami, Fla.) went 2-for-3 as well with two RBI.

Prior to the game, the Sharks honored 10 student-athletes that are finishing their careers in 2012 and are playing in their last home series. After the ceremony, the Sharks jumped on the board first with two runs in the second inning. The rally started with back-to-back hits from Marrero and Echevarria. Ryan Woodrey (Fr., Lighthouse Point, Fla.) drove home the first run on a sacrifice fly and Navarro brought home another on a shallow single to right field.

Rollins chopped away at the lead with a run in the third and fourth innings. The Sharks retook the lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Marrero led off with a single through the right side and eventually scored on Woodrey’s single to right field. Rollins took control of the game in the fifth, building a two-run lead with three runs.

The Sharks cut into the lead in the sixth, as Echevarria led off with a double down the left field line and scored after two-straight grounders. NSU went on to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh. Eric Acevedo (Jr., Miami, Fla.) drew a four-pitch pinch-hit walk to put the tying runner on base. After Javi Sujo (Sr., Miami, Fla.) and Petitbon advanced him to third, a passed ball allowed Acevedo to score, sending the game into an extra inning.

With two outs on the board and the bases loaded in the top of the eighth, the Tars drove in three runs on two straight singles. The Sharks were near the bottom of the lineup in the bottom of the eighth and could not reach base with two fly outs and a strikeout.

The series will be decided with a single game Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at the NSU Baseball Complex.
