TAMPA, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern baseball team (33-13) is set to compete in the NCAA South Region Tournament, held in Tampa, Fla. from May 17-21. The fifth-seeded Sharks face off against fourth-seeded No. 24 West Florida Thursday at 2 p.m.

The regional tournament is a double-elimination style tournament that stretches over five days. The next round’s game will be played on Friday between either No. 1 Tampa or Stillman, depending on the outcome of the first-round games.

The Sharks face off against a West Florida squad they have not faced this year. The Argonauts are the defending South Region and National Champions. They also entered the 2012 season as the preseason favorite to repeat, according to the National Coach’s Poll. The Argos did not live up to their lofty standards, losing the Gulf South Conference regular season and tournament title to Delta State. However, West Florida had a strong enough season to be placed fourth in the region, making them the home team Thursday.

The Sharks enter the weekend after a strong showing against Rollins last weekend, winning a weekend series, 2-1. The Sharks took two 6-3 victories over the weekend and one extra-inning loss, 8-5Areo Regoli (Sr., Homestead, Fla.) hit his 16th home run of the season on Thursday before the first game of the series was rained out. He is now one of four players to reach 16 home runs at NSU in a single season.

Ray Navarro (Sr., Miami, Fla.) and Nikko Echevarria (Sr., Abqaib, Saudi Arabia) each hit over .400 in the series. On the mound, Vinnie Contaldi (Jr., Jupiter, Fla.), Nolan Houmes (Jr., Land O’ Lakes, Fla.) and Shane Hill (Jr., Davie, Fla.) allowed a combined four runs over 15.1 innings.

This is the second time in program history that the Sharks advanced into the postseason. NSU made the South Region Tournament last season and went 2-2 with wins against Stillman and Harding. Although the 2011 Sharks paved the way for future NSU teams, a loss in the first round buried them in the loser’s bracket. If the Sharks find themselves in the same situation this year, they will have to play doubleheaders in order to climb back into the championship game.

The Sharks will look to avoid winning the tournament the hard way, putting themselves ahead of half the field with a win against the Argos. Much of this will depend on NSU ace Zachary Westcott (So., Weston, Fla.), who is expected to start Thursday. Westcott earned All-Sunshine State Conference First-Team honors with an 8-2 record and a 2.36 ERA.
